how to get good bass without sub
 

I have an older alpine cd unit. I think there are some old pioneers in the door and stock in the back. I would like to improve the sound.

Here is my problem. I park my Jeep Cherokee outside right now and our neighbor hood has been prone to car theft. I have lost an ipod and a gps.
I am worried if I put a sub in the back they will grab it.

Is there a way to get good bass in a quality 2 way speaker for the fronts?
I read on crutchfield some JL audio that reviews stated good mid range bass.

I dont need to shake the car just want good sound quality and right now I have nothing on the low end. I will probably get an amp also. looking at the alpine MRP-F300. might be alot now but eventually I would like to have a proper sub in the back.

A good set of 6.5 and a pair of 6x9 in the back if you can fit them, on something like 50-75w per channel, can return pretty fair results. Add a pair of bass shakers under the front seats on 25-30w each and it can be a pretty convincing combination.

You carry a spare tire inside the hatch? More than one person has bolted a wood disc on the front of the wheel, another on the back, and sunk a 10" into it. Use long bolts to hold the two discs together and you can still use the spare. Put a fabric cover on it and you get bass from no space ;)

My stock speaker size is 5-1/4" can you suggest a speaker brand and model that is known to produce good mid bass that will work the same as a 6x9?

I love the spare tire sub I think i can make that work and hide it well enough.

Since yesterday afternoon I've been running an 8" Cadence subwoofer, powered at 4ohm, off a Kenwood Mono amp. It's getting 300W, rated for 250WRMS. And it sounds superb.
I some cases, adapter plates are available to up-size speakers in a given location.
Crutchfield might tell you whether or not that is true for your Cherokee. If you can upgrade to 6.5" in the front doors, add an 8" (I recommend it) sub, and amplify accordingly, you should end up with the sound you're looking for.
Dukk's sub-in-the-spare would be ideal. Keep it stealthy so you don't attract that unwanted attention.

Tragic- so i will get better sound with the larger 6.5" speaker? i checked the vehicle fit guide on crutchfield and a number of larger speakers fit. here are a few below that look promising. whats with the polk? they have 280 reviews with 4.5 rating on crutchfield. why so many reviews are they crazy good or what?

Unfortunately, its not as simple as saying a bigger speaker will sound better - there are a lot of variable that come into play. However, a 6.5" version of the same 5.25" speaker will generally have better power handling, and will be able to reproduce deeper frequencies with more precision and volume than it's smaller counterpart. Simply, the larger driver has more surface area so it moves more air, but this doesn't mean it will sound "better". Deeper? Most likely.

I can't comment on the Polk brand. I've never heard them in action. Most of us would suggest that if you plan on replacing your speakers, you would be wise to hit a few audio shops and audition speakers. The downside to this might be you find out you'll have to spend more money to get the sound you want.

I had MB Quart Reference 6.5" speakers in my previous car. But these were component sets, where the tweeter is mounted separately from the woofer.
My wife has MB Quart Premium 6.5"s in her '08 Accent. They're component as well. However, she recently blew her front-passenger door speaker.

To me, it sounds like the woofer is scraping along the side of the center pole. So I'm going to replace her speakers with a solid woofer driver.
Because of the success I had with the Cadence subwoofer, I'm going to order Cadence components for her car. If they sound good, I might buy a set for myself.

Everything mentioned already I would agree with. You'll be amazed at what 6x9's can do when they can handle some power.

If your really upset after it all, I would look into all the smaller/stealth/shallow products out there. You could have a shallow sub or a small 8 in a box and have a blanket thrown over it and no one would ever know the difference, especially if you have any rear tint at all.
I get the neighbourhood thing though, that's why my area doesn't know what I have in my car.
