How important are power wire connectors?

I just bought a new system and found out the connectors supplied with my amp kit dont fit my amp.. The wiring is 4ga and the amp accept 8ga connectors.. I was just wondering what would happen if I just connected the power & ground wire to the amp with no connectors.
It'll be temporary.

Reason I ask why is because I just spent a lot of money on a new in dash dvd player & system and the cheapest 4ga to 8ga reducer connectors I could find were $12 + $30 shipping!

Also do I need to buy battery terminals to connect my power wire to the battery?

edit: Does anybody know if Home Depot sells connectors? Which ones do I need ring terminals, o....? (yes im a n00b)

Just got off the phone with best buy.. They said only some amps need connectors others you can crimp the wire.. How do I tell if I can do that?

You can order them through crappy tire auto parts. Free shipping to the store and i paid about 8-9 bucks a piece for the 1/0-4 gauge reducers. They are sold by tsunami. Just go through the special order catalogue at the parts desk and look under 12 volt elctronics.

Do they have them in stock at the store? I want to get the system installed on wends/thurs.

Also does anybody no if I can just plug the wire in straight with no connectors?
