How to run car audio subs to a home receiver ??
 

Hi,. I have seen a friend run car audio subs to a home receiver and it pounds!

ive been trying to figure out how he did this,. i went to 2001 audio and video and they said that things would overheat and blow, but others have told me its totally doable..

can someone tell me how this is done and what kind of receiver i should get, minimum wattage, brand, type , etc???

hmmm well first off i think home theater runs off of 8 ohm and most car audio runs 4 ohm so your gunna need to do a do-able wire configure to make that work, second isue i see is that home theater receivers or te ones i have seen play full range and have a rca out to a powered subwoofer, verry similar to what a car deck has full range speaker out then signal our for powered subwoofer....so i guess you would need a receiving amp idk man best way o do it would be to ask your buddy,,, dous he have car subs then he uses house speakers?

someone told me if you are running one sub to make sure its single 4ohm and then run it in series and if you want to run 2 subs to make sure they are dual 4 ohm each,..

does that make sense/would it work?

I build HT subs with car subs all the time....sorry to say but you have it exactly backwards.....that should be single 8 or dual 4ohm loads.....:ohwell: :D

First thing to check is the sub out on the receiver....Home Theater in a box systems usually have all the amp channels in the main unit. They are generally 8 or 6ohm loads rated at around 100watts per channel, you will have to confirm this. If it is a powered output, you can hook up any 8ohm load to it and it will work fine. I prefer to the power over 2 10" or 12" 4ohm subs wired in series, the extra cone area helps make up for the lack of power.

If the receiver has an RCA output for the sub, you can use any power amp you like to drive whatever speakers you have.....just make sure the load on the amp is correct and away you go.....:)

I have several stereo home amps that I tried this with.....any such amp that has A and B speaker outputs rated at 8ohms per channel will handle a single pair of 4ohm drivers on 1 set of outputs only at a time......I have an old Sansui 115w per channel power amp that will push well over 200 per into a pair of 4ohm 12"s at my friends cottage.....the bass in the living room will shake beer bottles off the deck railing 40' away......:smilie_da

if your pre amp or your reciever has a sub out you can always pick up a plate amp and build your own box.some plate amps will go down to 1 ohm,some 2 ohm but most are very reliable at 4 ohm.depends on what you want to spend of course..

don't know about the receiver but Im running a bazooka sub , kenwood amp and sony deck off a computer power supply as my home stereo

i have a sub out on my receiver and i have an old luxman amp running an alpine type r. and its sounds pretty good. the only thing is is that car subs are tuned to be in a tight area so in a house they sound different because its alot of really deep bass. so i made my own box for and tuned it to 45 herts. sounds much better. but deff duable and awesmome

Here's what I do....

Go to a pawn shop and buy the cheapest crappy looking powered sub enclosure. As long as the amp works, who cares...

Then, build a nice HT enclosure for your car sub ensuring that the amp plate will fit.

Install the amp plate, plug everything in and your done.

I did one for a buddy awhile back. He went to XS Cargo and bought one of them dual 12" boxes that you could see through to the shiny (yet puny) subs. lol

Put on an old amp from his lil 10" home powered sub, and he was more than happy. Shakes his whole damn house on 250 watts.

The trick is to use lower powered subs. They will respond better to the lower power your feeding them.

I'm currently using my old JL 15"w3 as my HT sub. Sounds great!
