HU upgrade time.
 

I'm going to be replacing my HU soon, and I was looking around for any units with a removable drive, or something similar. but I haven't found too much.

can anyone point me in the right direction?

The older (c.2002-2003) Alpine 16 gig player hda 5460, and the pioneer deh p90hdd come to mind as well as the Rockford fosgate omnifi dmp1 with wireless music download from your home pc. I thought at the time they were overpriced, but still believed that they would eventually become the norm. I think I'm somewhat correct, though as usual the basic concept has been implemented in a different way...IPODS.

You know I sometimes think omnifi just came too soon - I mean everything you rip automatically downloading to the car is a neat concept... I think only half of the people out there use Ipods as "portable" stand alone devices -- most people I see want to integrate them with their home or car systems.

I'll be honest, since I got my 60 gig Ipod video about 4 months ago, and hooked it up to my Alpine deck via the special input adaptor, I have not played a single cd in the car. It is so much more convenient, the quality is what I want it to be (cd lossless to mp3 low bit rate), the car is much cleaner without all the cds everywhere, I keep my eyes on the road a lot more, and I don't have to worry about someone walking by and seeing a car full of cd's deciding to steal them. On top of it all, I have actually been listening to all my music that I never had the time to look for in the past, and I don't have to worry about damaging the discs, or friends asking to borrow them, and never seeing them again or getting them back all scratched to hell. Anyway, safe to say I'm never going back. Now all the ipod needs is optical out with multi channel capability, and aftermarket head units need to be fully ipod compatible...you will have a simple, clean system to carry along the bulk of your entertainment on the road. Imagine a terrabyte ipod the size of a box of cigarettes that has 2000+ dvds on it, and 50,000 songs, all at your fingertips anywhere you go complete with multi channel sound, and worth no more than 500.00. Technology ROCKS!!!

Imagine 120 hours of music on one piece of plastic. Wait its already here, on a dual layer DVD.

With so many people having Ipods and other portable devices, why bother with yet another loadable type device when you can use a portable type and use it in the car and elsewhere. If you have a Ipod go with a good Eclipse headunit like the CD4000 and take advantage of the free Ipod interface right now.

Until the day boomboxe's, home theaters, car stereo's etc can all easily read Ipod's I don't see advantage of that over a having a indash DVD player. 8GB on one piece of plastic is like a small hard drive in itself. I don't like the idea of having a external device conected to the head unit to get the music from. Rather have a clean looking system. Less obvious to car thieves that might want to steal it.

^^the giga dvd is pretty nice, but I still like the idea of all my tunes with me no matter where i am...I get in moods, and only "that song" will cure it. As for clean, my ipod is in my centre armrest console hooked through an Alpine adaptor which allows almost full control over it from the deck...you would not even know I have one unless I told you. In fact you can't even see it in the armrest, because it's so thin that it sits flush against the inside in a protective cover. Anyway, time will tell if this is the future of car audio.
