I wanna deck out my Dodge Ram!!!!
I got a 2001 dodge extended cab diesel truck and I wanna make it produce very clean sound. I have an Alpine CDA-117 deck already, so I'm looking to build off that. Underneath my back seat I can only fit 10" shallow subs. I'm going to need amps, 4 speakers (2 6.5 or 6x9's and 2 5 1/4's), tweeters, wiring, and everything else. The whole set-up.
What's your opinion for this beast?! |
all depends on budget
|
Budget isn't so important; but I want the best, not the best of the best of the best.

front stage - hertz mlk's -- $500
front stage amp - audison, jl, arc audio, $300 and up rear fill (if you want it) - alpine type s -- around $100 or more (dont need anything incredible for rear fill) shallow sub -- ???? maybe a sundown sd-1 -- i think around $250 shipped or a little less sub amp - sundown audio, arc audio, audison, tons of amps for the sub -- could be from $300 and up depends how much head room you want get some sound deadner that isnt made of ashphalt maybe around $200 or more depends how much u want to cover you would probably need 4 guage wiring unles your getting a powerful amp which is around $50 give or take maybe something for some extra tuning -- could be from $100 - $1000 if your budget isnt important you can go further with some 8'' midbases and budget is important because alot of people really dont know how much a good sounding system really costs unless you know how to do everything yourself and know how to find deals tons of options just depends how far you want to get into it you can amp you tweeters or leave them, you can get 8'' midbases and amp them, you can amp your rearfill or not. we would need more info from you like how much space you want to use up and what your budget really is, if you want to buy new or used, do you want extra power incase you want to go louder in the future. id suggest buying from here. theres tons of good stuff for good prices be ready to spend a good 2 grand for something "okay" im already at $2000 and im not even close to happy yet |
Hey thanks a lot for all the advice, i will go with the hertz mlk's. The reviews seem to be really good for those speakers. Currently i have type S speakers all around, and if you think i can just use them as fillers in the back then i will probably do that for now. What speakers would you use in the back to match the hertz if i was to change them later, because i don't really like them, and i've blown them before under warranty. Maybe thats my fault.
This is as far as i've got so far. So to power those type S speakers i have a MTX 4 channel 400watt rms tc4004. Should i change that to power the mlk's or not? If i do, then what type of wattage should i be looking at with those brands you gave me? I don't want to bombard you with too many questions, but i'm good at that. So 'll try to limit them a bit. The guy at a shop said i should go with type R's. How do they compare with the sundowns, just so i have an idea? Lastly, my truck has two 12v batteries. Should i put in another one or change the alternator/ buy a capacitor? This is great help! Does anyone else have any advice to add? |
Cap's are mostly looked down upon in the car-audio community, if you're worried about it just get a decent car-audio battery for almost the same price and get a hell of alot more out of your money. another thing is yeah you definitely don't want to be running that MTX to $500 sets of speakers if you've blown others, unless you plan on powering JUST the one set maybe. i'm running an 800w Ultimate speaker amp to two sets of Energy components @ 65w RMS/speaker 4 ohm which i love but still wish i had more power to push 'em at their potential.. next time i buy a speaker amp i probably won't go lower than 90w/chan.
for rear fill, you're talking alpine type S/R's right? i've had the 6.5" type S set before amp'd and everything which were alright but when i tried using them as rear fill for my better ones in front the tonal balance of both together sounded really bad; if i were you i'd definitely get the same brand and preferably the same model for front and rear. something i'd like to try soon is having just midbass drivers in the back, that way (in theory, and in my case) not only are you adding crisper, stronger sound by having midbass separated but your soundstage also isn't being shifted behind you.. i've no experience with that yet though so meh. Also, learning's awesome- if you're curious just ask. plenty of knowledgeable people around here  |
what is the overall goal here? sq? spl? or alittle of both for daily driving?

MLKs are nice. Use that TC amp for them only. Bridge it to 2channels and use the passives that come with the speakers.
For subbass I would look at an MTX Thunderform or a JL vehicle specific enclosure and a 500-750watt sub amp. The rear speakers can be ran off of deck power. |

get a better 4 channel amp and go active on those MLKs and you'll be grinning from ear to ear lol

A 'better' 4channel amp? :dunno:
More power maybe but I'd try it first. |
