Ilumination Wire?
I was wondering if I could use the ilumination wire that my deck doesn't use to power a L.E.D light? I want the light to come on when i put the dash lights on and dim with the dash lights. More or less I have a empty slot below my deck I want to cut out a word in some plastic to make a cover for this slot and behind that slot put the L.E.D then when I turn my lights on the word lights up as though it were a factory light. Would this work?
Thanks for the help. |

Unless you are talking about something else, the illumination wire on a deck is an input, not at output. It is designed to be hooked to the dash light circuit so that when the dash lights turn on, the deck receives the signal as well. This signals the deck to dim the lights on the screen. I have seen decks with "+" & "-" illumination wires, but they both do the same thing, just using a different signal.
If you want to power an LED light, just connect it to the parking light/dash light wire with a resistor in series with it. |
Ya teh parking /dash light wire is what I was talking about. On the harness to connect the decks harness to teh car is a orange wire marked "illumination" that my deck doesnt use so I was wondering if I could use taht wire as a power wire for the L.E.D

That orange wire does not have 12v sitting there ready to power something else. It is waiting for 12v to be sent to it (ie: when the vehicle lights are turned on if it is connected) so it can tell the deck to dim the display at night. You cannot power anything off of that wire.

Most cars have power out from the orange wire when the parking lights are turned on. Phil G. is mistaken.
LED's will not dim without a very special module. |
So if I hook up to that wire and turn the lights on (dash lights come on ) theres no power there?
I supose to check for sure I'll just have to dig into the dash and see with a multi meter whats going on haha. |
ya I don't REALLY car if it dims or not I just want it to switch on/off with teh rest fo teh dash lights and its just so much cleaner if it all goes with the same switch.

Maybe I'm confused but lets go through this once more.
The original post states that there is an orange wire coming from your deck that is not used. This is the wire that would normally be connected to the parking light circuit to trigger the dimmer in the deck. You say you want to take this wire that is not connected to anything and power an LED with it? SQ Monster, how can there be 12v on that wire coming out of the deck when the parking lights are turned on if it's not connected to the parking light circuit? |
Maybe it's an issue the way the original post is written.
98gpse, your post says "ilumination wire that my deck doesn't use" - does that mean that it is not hooked up or are you saying it is hooked to the parking light circuit but you know that your deck doesn't use it? |
