input voltage question
ok well i bought a amp(Clarion APX401.4) for this guy i know. well on the gain **** the lowest setting is 2.5 volts(it goes from .25 to 2.5 volts, so is 2.5 the highest or lowest setting?). is this going to be a problem since the HU (CDA 7892) puts out 4 volts?
thanks alot guys

Shouldn't be a problem. Set the gain on the amp to mininum(.25). You'll be able to turn the volume on the HU very high which is ok. if at max volume on the hu and it isn't loud enough slowly turn up the gain on the amp til your max volume is acheived.
HUm.....if im not mistaken setting it to .25v and running high volume from a 4volt deck will CLIP THE FARK outta the amp. From my understanding of gain. .25v makes it very sensitive and 2.5v would make it least sensivite. You have 4V output and the amp can make full power with a 2.5V input . im pretty damn sure you must be putting your gain to 2.5V side.
Basically what im saying is OPPOSIte of pyro. Im only saying what i knwo from my expeirice i have a pg t500.2 and ti 400.2 both amps go from 4V - .2V and 6V-.2V and with the 6V one my gain is 1/3 way up from 6V side and the 4v-.2v my gain is closer to the 4V about 1/4way up from 4V.

But wont he clip the hell outta the amp with the gain at the .25V side with even moderate volume levels. I know when i set my gain wrong it was getting very muddy distorted bass with lots of l ight dimming
Start with the gain at 2.5 Volts, turn your deck up til the rest of the speakers just start to clip (distort) and then slowly turn up the sub gain til it either clips, or stops getting louder. Should be well before the .25 setting, but let your ears decide.
He could run it with the gain at 0.25 volts if he set the volume on the head unit low enough ... And it would still be the same volume with 0.25 volts on the pre-outs with the gain set at 0.25 volts as it would be with 2.5 volts on the pre-outs with the gain set to 2.5 volts ...
Although, obviously, you'd want to take advantage of the higher signal-to-noise ratio as a result of using a higher voltage on the pre-outs + a lower gain setting ...

Exactly.
Plus you want to be be able to get the the fronts at full volume so it sounds good. And who knows...maybe an inefficient sub, plus the decks amp outputs, might combine to justify having the sub amp pinned at .25, to get the bass up where it's satisfying... sometimes you have no choice but to do it "wrong".
