JBL Power series 6.5 vs Alpine Type R 6.5

I've had these Type R components sitting around for awhile, so I figured I would A/B them against the JBL Power series components I have currently in the vehicle. All I can say about the Alpines is that I was very disappointed, they lacked midbass and were generally quieter than the JBL's, I somewhat liked the softness of the silk tweeters, but I still enjoy the brightness of the titanium tweeters. Needless the say, there will still be no Alpine product going in my car.

Now if only I could upgrade to the GTI's, I'm sure it would be a big pay off to my ears

I've owned 2 sets of Gti comps and the new 660 Gti set currently as well. The c608 gti are one of the most under rated sets available in my opinion. They are Very powerful, dynamic, and one of the lowest distortion set of comps I've ever owned. The tweeters are the best sounding titaniums I've heard next to the 660's in terms of detail and clarity and unlike typical metal dome tweets, they do not get over bearing after a few minutes even at very high volume levels...the rubber surrounds do their job very well to damp the resonance. Since getting the 660's (which are hands down the best set of speakers I've ever owned outside of my home system), I've relagated one of Gti sets to the rear for excellent fill, and sound output when I want to crank it. I've owned the power series as well, and they are a best buy for value vs. performance. Overall, JBL makes one of the best complete line of speakers from mild to wild, especially when price is factored in.

Then again, GTi's are even better still. OP, with JohnnyRock having a set you may be better off to pick up that set. Not sure what coinage you have to work with, but the GTi series would easily outperform the Power Series and the Type R's

How much power can you run into the GTI's?

i run just the mids at 150 actively and they laugh at it. ive heard guys running 200 to them with no issues. there beefy and take the power

veeman 07-19-2010 01:41 PM

I had 318 watts rms running to each mid from a bridged 4 ch rf p4004 (as per the birth sheet) for 2 years and they're now in the rear deck as i have the 660 gti up front. They're getting 110 a side now. The tweets were getting 100 each...all actively crossed using 24 db/oct slopes and 50 hz to 3500 hz for the mids, 3500 up for the tweets. Yes it got loud, but it was the clarity and dynamics that was amazing. Obviously you need to be cautious with the volume control, and i wouldn't recommend over powering to a novice, but if you know what you're doing lots of power works very well, and those 2 inch voice coils can take a lot.
