JL 12W7 is crap????

i just recently bought one JL 12W7 in a sealed box. From what ive read its crazy bass for one sub. I have a alpine mrpm1000 amp wired to it and full the gain is all the way full. The amount of bass coming from it is nothing for what i expected. I just wasted a ton of money it sucks. Its on the back seat of my truck and im absolutely disappointed

w7's are nice subs. sounds like you have something sketchy going on.

....and i'd rethink running an amp at full gain. thats just asking for trouble.

nothing will make a difference as much as a box will. providing there isn't anything broken or malfunctioning, get yourself a nice ported enclosure built for the sub.

Sounds like it's time for a new enclosure. :sly:

if i put my 10" idmax on the back seat in my van it will literally disappear, no output at all... you need to find the right spot. Also like other mentioned the box will play for a big part.

here are the facts:
W7's are good subs by anyone's yardstick
they can get loud with music but are by no means the loudest subs available
they sound very good, but others may prefer other sub's sound quality
they tend to be priced higher than comparable subwoofers, but do offer very good quality and craftsmanship
therefore, there is something else causing the poor performance you're getting.

possible problems:

damaged or defective subwoofer
poorly constructed or designed enclosure
poor position in vehicle
amplifier problems
poor source material
unreasonable consumer
installed incorrectly or wired improperly
my suggestion, seek the help of someone who knows what they're doing.

ya it may be the enclosure i could only get the top 4 screws mounted onto it out of the 12 cause the subs screws r like inside the damn thing. I wired it correctly as 3 ohm. positive from amp to positive on sub and negative to negative

The JLs are a pain to get the screws into but you have to have the sub sealed to the box.....if 2/3rds of the woofer circumference is not screwed down you have the source of the problem right there.

Failing that, check the settings for the Xover on the amp.....it also sounds like you could have set it to HP mode.....:smokin:

well you have your answer from your buddy's install...maybe he can take a look at it for you and help you figure out what's wrong.
