JL 8W7 Amp ?
Hi Im wondering what amp I can use to power a JL 8W7 Sub ?
The sub is 3 ohms. Can I bridge 2 channels of a 4 channel amp ? or should I just get a mono 1 channel amp thats 1 or 2 ohm stable ? http://i37.tinypic.com/2emdggn.jpg http://i33.tinypic.com/1gfzm9.jpg |
Is your sub a single voice coil? If so then just get an amp that is 2 ohm stable.

One of my customers has an 8W7 on a 2ch amp bridged @ 3ohms, works just fine.
I'm trying to talk him into something with a little more power, but what he has works well. |
Some 4 channels will work just fine on it, others....well.... depends. You get what you pay for. A mono amp most certainly would work just fine for you. Do you have a budget for the new amp and a level of quality or kwality in mind?

I might just buy a quality mono amp rated at 300 rms. |
It is a 3 ohm svc. However, you are looking at the passable amount of power for it to get results, I would find a little more power for it to bring it to life. No point in having such a fine sub and then using it to only 50-60% of it's true abilities.

This depends on budget, quality or kwality. Some of the 4 ohm mono amps will indeed provide the power you need into 3 ohms, especially the class D variety. There is a deal on the Eclipse XA2000 class D 2 channel right now, it is a guaranteed 300w rms into 4 ohm and will provide more than that right out of the box. Drop the load a little more and you are going to be closer to the 425w rms mark. This amp should be shortlisted for sure.

The Sundown SAX-100.4d would be a good match. It'll have 100x2 for the front components and 400x1 @4ohm for the sub (so you can expect more when running it at 3ohm)
