looking for some guidance
 

To make a long story short, a while back I got screwed on an active x-over/eq that I bought online and I've been sulking about it every since.

It was supposed to be the last component for my active 3 way and since it was a pretty important piece due to the fact most of the amps I'm using don't have built in x-overs, I've been driving around the last few months in a silent truck.

So today I was cleaning up some stuff and decided maybe I should try my hand at putting together a 3 way passive setup.

Main issue at hand is I have $0 to work with, so this will definitely complicate things.

I have a crappy HU (Jensen 9311TS) that has very limited x-over capabilities so that won't help much.

Here's what I have to work with for my front stage.

Exile X1T Pro 1" tweeters (4ohm)
Seas L12RCY 4.5" mid (8ohm)
Peerless 830667 8" bass (8ohm)

and a Rockford Fosgate RFP 4412 12" sub (SVC 4ohm)

for amps I have a few old school guys:

Rodek 235i 35Wx2
Lanzar 50Wx2
PPI 2150 150Wx2

and potentially a JL Audio 300/4. (I'm looking to sell it since I'm out of a job, so I'd like to use it as a last resort)

When I was cleaning out some stuff in the basement I came across the Exile XP65 passive x-overs and that's what got me thinking.

The passive x-over is designed to be used with the X1T Pro tweeters and 6.5" mids and the x-over point is at 2.5k. You can also bi-amp them.

First question.

How stupid is it for me to use x-overs designed for 4ohm drivers with a 4ohm tweet and 8ohm mid?

Will the x-over point change due to the driver's impedance? It's been a long ass time since I played with car audio and I forgot most of the theory behind it.

I hooked the tweet/mid via crossover to the Lanzar amp and it sounds ok...but I definitely think there is too much bass coming across to the mid. The suspension is working pretty hard at moderate volume.

Could I possibly add another coil/cap/whatever to cut off more bass?

I'm planning on running the peerless off the PPI amp, so I would need a bandpass filter there. Any cheap solution for that?

Like my title says, I'm looking for some guidance as to what I can do to get some "decent" sound in my truck until I get some funds going again, so if anyone has better ideas as to how to do things I'm all ears.

Not stupid by any means, maybe not ideal either, but it wont "hurt" anything to at least try.

Yes, it will change the crossover points, but since the Xovers arent the ideal ones, the change may be so subtle that you wouldn't know the difference anyway.


If you have a way to get them from me, I have a set of 3-way JL XR xovers you're welcome to use, temporary fix that will at least give you tunes for now.

Not hurting anything was my first concern. I don't want to kill those seas mids. They've been sitting on my shelf ever since I got them from you.

Any idea how much power they would need? Are they bi-amp capable?

To be honest I'd hate to be responsible for giving you improper information and wrecking things.
I will tell you however that I'm using the crossovers right now on two 1" rainbow tweets, two seas excel 4.5's (nearly identical to yours) and two peerless sls 6.5's a'm thinking they are erring on the side of caution because they will take everything my amps can throw at them and not worry.

I also have the 2-way crossovers that were made for those seas you have, tweeter might be an issue however, but you could use them as bandpass for the 4.5's then highpass at the amp for tweets and lowpass at the amp for m/b????

I didn't see you list a sub so I'm assuming you're running subless for now? do you listen at volumes where you can't just lowpass the midbass (caution with gains of course)?

The sub I'm planning on using is an RF 4412, but I'm not overly concerned with the sub. That is probably the easiest thing to deal with.

I haven't listened to anything (other than a factory system) in so long, I don't even remember how I am with the volume :D

I'd say that normally I'm overly cautious with the volume and I've usually set the gains low, but that's not to say I don't like it loud, just set things a tad lower than their maximum safe setting.

Like I said, these amps don't have built in xovers, so I wouldn't be able to hp the tweet without using something passive anyway.

Do you remember what the 2-way is x-over at? The exile people suggest 2.5 for the tweet.

I don't want you to have to rip something out that you're using.

On the JL's I have no idea what the crossover points are, from listening to them
, if I had to guess I'd say the 4k range for the tweets, the custom made ones
are 2k.
