:ohwell: :eyes: Don't even know where to start.

For those of you who don't know already. I bought an Apline Type R 12" with a 1.5cube box with a 3inch port, and a DPX1800 amp (800rms)... Needless to say, it sounded damn good once it broke in. BUT, with the 3 inch port, it just wouldn't flow enough air, therefore choking out the sub and making it heat up, and quick! So, I was told to bring it back in after it broke in to get ports put in... So I did. Two four inch replaced the single 3inch. He phoned the Alpine tech number to get the specs for the length of venting for that size box. Two 6inch long 4inch ports. Done... Well, needless to say, I didn't like the sound at all. The bass I had liked just wasn't there! It sounded less boomy/rumbly and more sharp/quick (so hard to explain, you'd have to hear it). I wasn't happy at all. Sort of pissed the guys there off a bit by coming in so often and telling them I wasn't happy with it. The plan was to stick with the single Type R for now, and move up to another one later on down the road and build a new box. But who knows by then right? So today... I brought it in and asked what I could trade it in on instead... He's like here, gimme your keys, so I did. I thought he was just going to re-tune my amp again. Comes back in in a bit and says come listen. So I did, and wow what a difference. Sounded great, and even louder than ever! MUCH better... I thought great, this can't be too good for the sub. I told him that, he's like thats not your sub. It's right there *pointed to it sitting on the floor in the box*, I was like WTF? Here, he tells me it's two tens, RF tens... Opens the trunk and bam, here's two 400W RF Punch HE's (the older model, black ones) in a "custom" box (they ARE used, but not very much). I was like :sly: . :dunno:

I don't know what to do. They sound GREAT! But they are running off an 800rms amp at 2ohms, and they are only 200rms each. :dunno: They were taking a beating for the longest time! Cones didn't even get too warm. They hit strong and hard, and the amp is turned up, so I dunno... How long will they last like this? It sounds right on to me, loud, no distortion at all, and they are really moving lol.

So wtf? He told me I'll just have to pay another $100.


Man I dunno what to do. I AM pretty happy with their performance... Sounds way better than that single Type R.

I'm really confused, feels like I got into one big mess here... I spent alot (to me anyway. Stuff is expensive here) of money on my stuff so far lol.

What do you guys think? Like, it sounds great to me, just not sure what kind of a beating these subs will take for how long? I put them through their paces today and no smells and no large amounts of heat.

First of all, it's impossible to "choke" a sub. Have you ever seen a sealed box? Subs in a sealed enclosure can handle just as much power as subs in a ported enclosure.

It sounds like you, or whoever set your amp had a serious case of an itchy gain setting finger.

The only ways to overheat a speaker, to my knowledge are these:
-Clipping/distortion
-Overpowering speakers; 500rms on a 200rms speaker = fire; for example.

I've talked to you before about how UNDERpowering is a myth, hook a multimeter to a channel and watch the voltage as you turn down the volume on your deck. Then multiply that voltage by itslef (square) and divide by the impedance and you'll find out how many watts you're putting out at what volume.


What volume did you have the deck at when the amp was set. On average most higher-end decks clip above 2/3 to 3/4 volume.

You probably know that I'm a 10" lover :P So I'm not going to talk down your new speakers, but there's really no need for you to switch.

Also, heat develops in the coils of the sub, not the cone. Maybe if you can hook up a digital thermometer inside the box and stick the probe right next to the cage.

Man, lol... When I got home today, out of curiosity, I checked the amp settings and BAM! Bass boost was pretty much all the way up and so was the gain!? But these subs are fine?! WTF

Then at the beginning with the small port with the Alpine... The bass boost and gain were turned down. Not even close to what they are now. And it still was heating up until we got these ports in.

Man, I'm really like durt da durr right now lol... It's getting hard to get the words out. lol

I just might have to get ahold of you this weekend Brad.

No, I know that, but you'll be able to feel the heat on the cone... Plus the smell it will give off... Trust me I learned with that R series...

what's the box dimensions? 1.5cubes and 2 4 inch ports seem a bit excessive and doesn't quite make sense.

and with the 3inch port it wouldn't exactly choke the sub, it would just give port noise.

Ross, means like WTF am I braindead is the best I get out of it. So black cone HE subs that are used, handle less power, have zero warranty on them and they want you to pay $100.00 more. WTF. Take the $100.00 and put it towards the proper slot port box and keep the Alpine. Either that or put the Alpine and fire it into a sub box and sell it to a friend and start from scratch again. $100.00 more for used subs that are black cone Rockfords? WTF. Fix the problem which is the box and how the amp is set. Sounds like you have a person that is willing to come and help you locally with this, this is where I would start.

I don't know what kind of box/tuning the R needs but either way you are overpowering the R and the he's and sooner or later you may damage something........

quit screwing around and buy a 2nd type R and make sure they go in a proper box........
