Mixing sub sizes?
 

Hi, new here, thanks for the forum!

I just bought a 1990 honda accord. I have stock system in there now, and im semi-new to car audio. I am looking to do a simple install in the car, and would like some advice.

I had an integra with 2 12" kickers and i loved it. I kept them to tight bass and didnt push much power. I liked that the subs were not restricted by a trunk. I dont seem to like the muffled sound i hear from most trunk mounted subs.

So, since i have a sedan now, i am looking for a way to get some clean tight bass. I have looked at the new civic Si and i like the idea of putting a small sub on the rear deck, firing into the cabin. So i was thinking i would do that with 2 10"s(not free-air, ill do an enclosure)

OR

I would do 1 8" on the deck, and a 12" in the trunk, which would theoretically allow me to hit a larger frequency.

So, Ideas? How hard is it to set up different sized subs in one system? Is it worth it? What subs should i get for a budget system. I havnt bought anything yet, as i want to keep in mind my total system design before purchasing something that dosnt suit.

I think it's not worth it. And why is the sub muffled in the sedan is puzzling me. It usually plays 80hz and below and there's not much to muffle there. Putting 8s in the deck will require to bandpass them, ie crossover from the bottom and above.
If you want 8s to hit the upper bass range, you really need to focus on fronts, which are supposed to be solid down to 80hz at least. But if you don't care about the sq side of things, you might as well pile a whole bunch of subs and smile.

That would be a no to the mixing drivers UNLESS you are going to go the route of doing it properly (read that as $$$$$$$, lots of them). Ixnay on the idea to mount them on the rear deck as well UNLESS you plan on rebuilding the entire rear deck with some structural steel to keep the car from folding in the center.

Back to square one you go unfortunately. Find a good pair of subs or sub, get them into the proper box, power them with the appropriate amplifier and off you go.

Don't worry bout mixing subs.. it's actually a good practice at sound quality and assurance. Some people would beg to differ as it's " complicated and costly" but in my 11 years of audio play, it's been so far my quest/forte.

A buddy of mine asked if i would help install/shop for his Precidia.. and told me his idea.. 1 12" as well as 2 10's .. long story short we mounted 2 rockford 8 inchers ( older models before they went to scrap) in his rear seats cutting straight through while mounting 2 seperate enclosed boxes behind.. as well as an audiobahn 12 inch flame series in the trunk in a regular ported box. What you need to remember about this kind of setup is CONTROL.. he has a clarion deck and 2 audibahn equalizers.. one controling the 8's and one controling the 12. Using seperate amps and those eq's you can dial in what sub plays in what range, as well as an optimal range for that size sub to play.. the 12 is grabbing all low range stuff too about 120 hz where its cut off.. and the 8's are overlapping at about 110hz and higher ( can't remember the cut off) . It's alot of work wiring this type of setup.. but well worth it in the end. He's more of a hip hop hard techy trance kinda guy, and i like hip hop and drumb and bass. Both play equaly as well, and sound great. From hard punchy hits in hard house tunes... to long swooping sines in D&B this thing pounds hard.

If it's something you want to play around with go ahead.. whats the wort than can happen .. you'll change your mind.. so what who cares.. sell what you dont need.. or reconfigure.

If you want to use different speaker sizes keep each size doing a seperate frequency. Is it always better? Well lets just say that the more speakers you have playing the more tuning you have to do and the more chance of screwing things up exists.

For the original thread starter if you want to use two different sub sizes I would recommend using the single 12" just for low low bass and then use the 8" as an upper bass or midbass driver.

Why this guy is running his subs up to 120Hz is a big question. Although when he's stating RF driver's are now crap and he's loving the sound of a Audiobahn Flame driver I can see exactly how much faith I would put in his recommendations.
