i just want to share my experience as how it happened. It is very long so you should hit "back" on your browser if you don't want to hear me rant.

first i went to automobile forums and car stereo forums and did my research. i, then, decided and bought a set of Diamond Audio Hex online since no one carries them in Canada.

later, i went to SpeakerCity to shop for amp and sub.

Speakercity
sales: hi, what can i help you with?
me: i am here to shop for amp and sub.
sales: what kind of car? what kind of speakers do you have?
me: i have xxx car and i just ordered Diamond Audio Hex from the states.
sales: why Diamond Audio? i've never heard of it.
me: ?? i bought Diamond Audio because the stock speaker size is 6" not 6.5". DA Hex is exactly 6". Also the depth/space for speakers in the door only allow less than 2.25". only Diamond Audio Hex fits in my car.
sales: why do you want 6" and not 5.25"?
me: i want more midbass.
sales: for your car the speaker grill size is 5.25", you won't get more midbass from installing 6".
me: what do you mean?
sales: grill is 5.25, the sound from speaker will bounce from the back of front baffle and the extra midbass will be trapped in the door.
me: o o o..kay.. i already bought them. (thinking to myself, why are you telling me this? did i come here for speakers?)
sales: do you have a brand of amp in mind?
me: because i want to keep my factory HU and it sends BALANCE differentail signal, so i am thinking Soundstream Van Gogh amps because they accept differential balance signal.
sales: you will need an adaptor.
me: why do i need an adaptor? Van Gogh amps accepts balance signal, so i could hook it up straight from HU.
sales: but if you buy this adaptor, you don't need an amp that accepts balance signal.
me: how much is the adaptor?
sales: 18x.xx
me: (thinking to myself, why do i want to spend more money to buy adaptor when Soundstream Van Gogh can is plug and play??)
me: let me think about it.
sales: we have Audison SRX amp on sales. it is only 12xx.xx
me: let me think about it.
sales: what about sub?
me: i am thinking custom fiberglass box.
sales: we could make one on the side of trunk.
me: i want to keep as much trunk space as possible. other options?
sales: we could take out the spare and make a box there.
me: hmmm.. i prefer to keep my spare...
sales: we could also make a box to fit inside your spare.
me: really?
sales: yeah. we could make anything.

later as i do more research, i found out that practically all sub needs more than 0.4cu-ft sealed. there is no way my spare has that much space inside the wheel.

i don't think i like SpeakerCity.
first- never heard of Diamond Audio?
second- trying to get me to buy an adaptor i don't really need.
third- sub enclosure inside my spare-tire??

sorry about the rant. just want to provide some feedback as a customer.

Wow.

Entertaining, yet sadly true and common. :(

btw, there is a Diamond Audio retailer in the Lower Mainland.

If you have a good technical know how then almost 95% of the time it isn't worth talking to the person in retail.

talk to grant at speaker city he is the manager there and i can assure you that your experience wasnt the norm but the exception. speaker city is highly regarded and respected in both the home and car audio industry. im sure that the owner, sandy mcdonald, would not mind addressing your bad experience first hand, remember that was only 1 salesperson, who very well may be a dork, but i also know that you only get 1 chance to make a first impression, and yours was bad

For sure your experience was negative, which is too bad.

I have a question though. Considering this:

me: i am thinking custom fiberglass box.
sales: we could make one on the side of trunk.
me: i want to keep as much trunk space as possible. other options?
sales: we could take out the spare and make a box there.
me: hmmm.. i prefer to keep my spare...
Where did you expect them to put a box if you won't give up the trunk OR the spare tire well? Some cars offer alternatives but none of them are cheap.

Balanced differential outputs? Sounds like a Bose.
