Need help cutting a hole for a subbox
I'm about to build a sealed sub box and I'm not sure on how to cut the 10" & 3" holes needed. From what I've been reading you can use a router, but I don't know what kind of bit I would need.
Anyone know what I should be looking for? 3/4" MDF is what will be use. Thanks. |
3" hole saw for the port. For the router you are going to need a perfect circle jig as well. A good investment only if you plan on building lots of boxes. If not, break out the jigsaw. Or..... for the low low price of slurpees and pizza for the guys, bring your box up with you when you come and they will blast the holes in for you.

I was just planning to free hand with the router, and get a good wood file. Plus I've got some time to kill when I'm up there.

Ix nay on the free hand with the router, recipe for disaster and highly unsafe for most people.

straight bit for the router, as for the circle jig you can make a really easy one using a threaded rod and bolts and eye hook for the pivot point or try this on youtube

Last time i made a sealed box , i used a jigsaw for the circle very simple.

Jigsaw or make a quickie teardrop jig for your router out of some scrap.

Youtube link doesnt work. I would use a jigsaw but I dont have one. I really dont have any tools.

if you want to be really ghetto about it:
Use a piece of wire/string. Attach it to a leg of the router or some other fixed point. find the center of where you want your hole to be, adjust the string/wire for the size of hole you want and use a nail or screw to secure the wire/string in the wood. But honestly, you can get a really cheap jigsaw for like $20 at Canadian Tire or something like the dollar store and it will probably do a better job. (unless the string/router goes well for you) |
zellers has black and decker jigsaws for $19 and comes with 2 blades, I just bought one, and it wasn't on sale, that was the daily price.
