Need recommendation for basic car alarm system

I don't mean to thread jack, but its all on topic. What do you do when you find out someone is stealing the car/stuff? Grab a bat and go to work? (I imagine the police giving you a hard time for this) Or do you just hide in your house hopping the cops will show up before he runs?

Your presence near your car when someone's trying to hike your stuff will be enough to make them take off. If you want some vigilante justice, break out the bat! LOL Obviously not the recommended course of action, but I think most people wouldn't mind putting foot-to-@$$ on these scumbags

It is never recommended to approach anyone breaking into something. If you take a weapon with you, like a bat for example, it is you whom will also be facing a charge (assault with a weapon). What if the guy has a gun, what if he has a knife, what if he has 2 friends hiding in the shadows, what if he sticks you with a needle and what if the guy knows how to fight dirty..... In my experience dealing with these people they have all been in numerous fights before and know exactly what to do and you would be surprised at how quick they react. It took one guy I was arresting under a second to have a knife out when I was taking him down. Nevermind the concealed weapons that I have found on people upon searching them. Make note guys, unless you know your rights and are trained in use of force and powers of arrest, don't set yourself up for disaster. Nobody likes their stuff being stolen or seeing their vehicles broken into. Most people have camera's and cell phones to record video, do that, call the police and if the guy leaves, follow at a safe distance if you must to get a plate number or to see if he is going to the neighbours next. The more info you take down, the better off you are. Your life is not worth what is in your car.

New solution: Don't buy any alarm. Just squirt maple syrup on door handles, and other areas the theif would frequent with his hands. He'll get all sticky and frustrated when he sticks to everything, and it will deter him better than someone shouting "hey that's my car @$$hole!" or a loud siren from under the hood. 1 way, 2 way? NEITHER! Just buy Aunt Jemima

Haha thanks for the info guys . I am interested in Viper or Compustar. I know I can buy both around here .
I would like everything to be under 300 for an alarm system including labor. I just need a basic alarm around here. There are not many criminals around here, and if there is they are stupid as hell.

NEW VIPER 350 PLUS CAR ALARM 1-WAY CAR SECURITY SYSTEM - eBay (item 390129152590 end time Jan-07-10 21:46:17 PST)
I am looking into this, something basic that is 1-way, I have NO idea how much it would cost to install this. The car is a 2006 Corolla CE...
