I have run into a problem a couple days ago. My system was working fine for a couple weeks after I finished my install. However, on the drive home from work Friday, I went to mute and unmute my deck at a light (was playing at about 80% full tilt), and both my tweeters stopped working. My mids are working fine (Image Dynamics CTX65CS speakers btw). Everything looks fine, all my settings look correct. Any ideas? This is puzzling to say the least (and a major **** off!).

 

If you are using one amplifier for both mid/tweeter and using the passive crossovers, check the crossovers for a blown fuse or bulb on the tweeter outputs (hopefully they have some sort protection). If not, you can give the tweeters a quick resistance check with a multimeter. If the meter reads an open circuit, or too large of a variant they are blown.

Stupid question, but how do I check the resistance? Also, can I check at the crossover or do I have to pop my tweeter out?

 

Unhook it from the crossover, if you get a resistance at the crossover end of the wires you know the wires haven't shorted on something or pulled off.....

If not you'll have to pop them.....sorry....

How much resistance should I be looking for roughly?

 

Roughly......4ohms..........anything over 3 means the tweeter is still good.....

Hook the mid up to the tweeter outs on the crossover to confirm the crossover is still working.....

I hooked up both mids to the tweeter output and got sound, so that is good. However, when I put my multimeter to them (200 is the lowest setting you can put it on), I got it bouncing around like crazy. Is that because the setting is too high on the digital multimeter, or are my tweeters shot?

 

If you're measuring the tweeters on their own, not connected to the crossovers or speaker wires (at the pos/neg terminals) and getting strange readings... they are most likely burnt. If you get new tweets, put some protection in line for them so this doesn't happen again and turn the gains down if you are going to use the mute feature at high volumes often.
