Need some help!
I am looking to upgrade my car stereo, nothing too crazy. I have a new head unit a 12" sub and an amp. My amp is an Alpine V12 DC Straight 4/3/2 channel, would I be able to run my sub and a pair of 6.5" speakers off this amp or do I need to get another amp for the 6.5? I have gone to one reputable car audio place but they reccomended getting 4 6.5" speakers and a new amp, like I said I am not looking to go crazy but at the same time I dont want to not do my homework and risk some technical/sound problems.
I would appreciate anyone's help with this. Thanks |
you should be able to run that amp in 3 channel mode, where channels 3 and 4 are bridged to power a subwoofer. It all depends on what impedance your subwoofer is. If it's 4ohms single voice coil or dual 2ohm voice coils...you're good as those amps need to drive a 4ohm load when bridged. Channels 1 and 2 can be used to power your front 6.5's. If you decide you need rear speakers (some don't like it, I do) then you can always use the 4 channel for those, and get a sub amp later. Hope that helps.

thanks, i guess my problem now is knowing the ohms of my sub as it is already enclosed. it is an mtx blue thunder 12 inch, have had it for a long time with little use.
so with that setup you reccomended i should be ok for power? and if i do decide to add rears (future) i understand having to get an amp for the sub. i look forward to your response, i appreciate it. |
No one can tell you for sure if they will work together unless they know the exact model numbers of the speakers.
Post up the model numbers and we'll give you an educated answer. |
thats my problem, the box is enclosed so i dont know how to ge the model number
any suggestions? |
Use a multimeter to check on the load of the sub at the terminals.

Yes, get off lazy butt, pick up screwdriver and pull out sub, post model # on site.

took your advice
ok, so i got off my lazy ass (just very green to all of this) and took the sub out, it is 4 ohms, so based on what the 1st poster replied do i look to be all right to bridge channels 3 and 4 to run the sub and 1 and 2 for the 6.5's?
is there anything i would need to be concerned about, power etc? i look forward to your response thanks |
Post the model number of your sub, speakers, amp. Yes your sub can be hooked to your amps 3+4 channels as any Alpine V12 series amp will run a 4ohm bridged load. Whether any of it will be properly powered won't be known until you POST THE MODEL NUMBERS OF THE GEAR.

i have not bought the 6.5's yet, my amp model number is listed in my first post, as for the sub, the only thing it gave me was the ohms written on the side of the magnet, i looked everywhere man!
i was going to by herz 6.5's, the guy said they are good. |
