an idq12 d4 v2 in a 'normal' (1.25 cu ft) ported box
or an idmax 12d4v2 in a 'small' (1 cu ft) sealed box - for abt $150 more
I would go for 12" IDQ v3 in a sealed box. Small enclosure + good power handling + good efficiency + great SQ. You could probably use a dual 2 ohm version, cause I think that slash series JL will give same power at 4 ohms, and will give you higher damping factor.

I'm fine on buying used amps or other electronics, but not speakers. If you on a budget, I would say to go for the W3 and get new. ID is also a good choice. Amps are easy to fix, try and find a re-cone for a JL.

but JL's are magical and NEVER blow, why would you ever need a recone?

I'd say IDQ may or may not have enough output, since you're listening to "bassy music" as you mentioned. I'm talking about v2. I'm unaware if the v3s are available, but should be better than v2 in terms of output i'm sure.

imo I'd at least get an idmax or w6.

I dunno Al, a person should do something really wrong to blow up a sub like say w6 or w7.
Why would I need a recone for a sub if I really know what I'm doing to it?

well, you've proven that JLs do blow up. In an accident that is, as far as I remember an amp blew them up hehe.
As do the infinitys you had right?

I've never blown a JL and i've owned just about every model they've had since the original w1 till I got my w7's when they came out. However, I did see some JL 10's get blown on an Orion red 225 by an Idiot.
