New amp and speakers
 

Hi, I recently replaced the factory head unit in my car (JVC R610), and now it sounds like somewhat distorted when i crank it up. I figure i need new speakers (4 6x9s). and i suppose i'll grab a 4 channel amp while i'm at it. 2 questions for ya:

1) Do you add the RMS of the head unit to the RMS of the amp when picking out speakers (or do you just use the amp RMS)?

2) any suggestions for an inexpensive 4 channel amp to power 4 6x9 speakers (no sub) and maybe some sepaker suggestions while i have your attention?

What's your budget? Which car is it?

its a 2007 Dodge charger. Budget is what it needs to be i guess. I've seen some amps on sonicelectronix that are under 200 bucks that 'sound' like a good deal. its more for the wife, she likes her music loud - not really too concerned with quality, just volume ;)

1. Just use the RMS of your amp. The deck rms ratings are for the decks built in amp, which will not be used in this situation.

2. If concern is volume over quality, basically any cheap amp with a couple sets of cheap 2-way 6x9's will work.

Note : These examples were just a quick search. I have no experience with FLI speakers, but they were cheaper than the Orions, and even if I get hated on, I think Power Acoustik makes decent amps for the money and have never had any problems with them.

If you want a "decent" powerful amp on the cheap definitely give RF's Prime series a look. As for cheap speakers, I really don't see much difference in build quality, once you drop below the $80 threshold it all seems to be pretty much the same to me.

Does your deck have built in crossovers? If so I would set them around 80-100hz to cut out the low end frequencies being fed into your in cars speakers. This is likely the cause of your distortion.

Thanks! I've been looking at a lot of stuff... I liked the rockford fosgate prime amp (only 50 rms - but how much is enough?) but i'll do some read ups on the others!

50Wrms is enough, especially when you aren't running a sub at all. Compared to deck output (usually around 18-22Wrms at best on aftermarket decks), 50W will give you the ability to send a clean signal (creating clarity and loudness) to you speakers without worry of distorting them and blowing them up again.

Autosounds4less is the best Ebay store IMO. They bullshit their paperwork so you never get raped by customs or HST/GST.

^ I have a pair of these and for $5 more than the comparable rockford prime and $10 more than entry level MTX these sound really nice
