New to site. Recommend 10" sub?

I'm new to the site. I'm looking for some recommendations for a 10" sub. I'm looking for something that won't break the bank, like under $200? The amp I have is an old school Rockford fosgate capable of 250RMS but may be underrated as some of the old amps were.

Alpine Type R is brobably your best bang for buck woofer.

The car is a 1990 Mustang coupe (ie very small trunk). The fosgate amp is actually a 5 channel, 600a5? circa 1999, currently running my 2 6x9's and 2 door speakers, but it also has a subwoofer channel which is not in use right now. I have a second amp installed, PPI 4200am (circa 1991) that I was planning on powering 2 12" speakers free air. The free air idea didn't work out too well (I was trying to save trunk space). So now I've decided on a decent 10" in a box and keeping only the fosgate amp.

If you are interested in saving space, the Pioneer Premiere TSSW1041D is a sub to consider. It is a shallow mount driver that takes less that 3" for mounting depth and a uber small box for it as well. It would fit exactly where you need it to fit and leave lots of space left over.

If your planning on running that RF then the specs on it are like this
50 W x 4 + 100 W x 1 @ 4ohms
100 W x 4 + 200 W x 1 @ 2ohms
So in order to get the most out of that 5th chan. you would need to find a 2ohm or a dual 4 ohm sub.
Also, that generation of RF amps were a little under rated but not as much as the generation before them. (Punch 200DSM) so you won't get much more than the 200 maybe 250 but thats about it.

Have you considered selling the PPI, if its the art series then I have seen them going for $300+ on Ebay, use the money to buy a amp that can power a sub with comfort.

Oh, yeah its a little more than $200, maybe more around $300, but the DD 2510 is a great sub but needs more power than you have.
You could look at a JL 10w3, there $2xx.00 and have an rms of 350 watts. I had 2 running for a while and they sounded good.....Not as good as my 2 2512's but ....

Thanks for the input so far. I should say that I'm not looking for something that will wake up the neighbours. I just need a decent sub that will sound good in the car. Do I really need more power? I do have another RF amp, 150a2, same generation, that I could let go for some extra funds as well.

Use a pair of the shallow mount drivers if you like. From your original post it seemed to me that space was a issue. Is this the case? Who will be building the box for you?

Space is an issue. I have about 13.5" at the highest point and about the same in depth (maybe a little more), then it drops below 8" as you move further back due to some horizontal bars (part of the trunk spring mechanism). There's plenty of width, maybe 30"? I have to take precise measurements. I don't have anyone yet to build the box. Are there pre-built boxes that would fit?

There are some out there that may work BUT the choice of box is more important that the choice of subwoofer. If I were in your shoes, I would pay for the custom box (a dual 10 or 12" sealed box should be no more than $150) as it would be guaranteed to fit and sound as it was designed to. To maximize the space available, the Pioneer Premiere shallow mount drivers will do a great job for you and your amp will be able to power them adequately.
