2 channels power the front speakers, 2 channels bridged runs the sub. In essence the 4 channel amp is now a 3 channel amp. Power wise lets say a 75w rms x 4 amp would then be 75w x 2 + 300w x 1.

If a sub "needs" lots of power, why is it that manufacturers for years built subs that only handled 100w rms of power (pick on say Rockford Fosgate here). There is no defacto standard that says you must have lots of power. It is all about the careful match of customer application - vehicle - box - sub - amp.
i agree, back in the mid/late 80's, my blue thunders ran nicely off a punch 150 for the pair, and still shook the car. Maybe those subs were a little more efficient back than, but i'm more inclined to think that we're all just a little greedy these days.
