newb help - alpine

I am looking at the Alpine Type-R 12" subs. Is it better to get 2ohm or 4ohm? and does that depend on whether I get two or one?

I was looking at using the JBL 1201.1 amp to power them.

that amp makes the most power at 2 ohms, so if you are planning on running two, then i would get the dual 2 ohm model and if you plan to run one, you can use dual 2 ohm as well for a 4 ohm final load

Depending on how you wire the sub or subs you can arrange to draw a certain load (measured in ohms). It all depends on how you wire it and whether or not you have a single or double voice coil sub or subs...you will want to make sure that your amp is capable of running at whatever load you decide to go with...almost all are good at 4 ohms and most 2 ohms...fewer are capable at running at 1 ohm.

generally with the wiring setup to run a lower load you will get a higher output from your amp given the same input.

I didn't have a chance to look at the specs for your equipment but you can check out http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp
for more info and options.

I myself run a 1200.1, if you think those alpines can take 600rms a piece, then by the dual 2's, if you don't think the alpines are up to it (I personally don't) then buy the dual 4's and they'll get around 400rms a piece. I am running 2 JBL power series 2ohm dvc's with that amp and am enjoying them a lot. Curious what price you're getting the 1200.1 for? I know quite a few other people running that amp and haven't heard of any problems as of yet.
From what I recall those type r's are good for 400rms, not sure if I'd brave them at 600. Alpine makes good decks and decent in car stuff, I wouldn't say I'm a fan of their subs.

anyone else got any input? should I run 400 or 600 watts to these subs that are rated at 500?

For someone that knows what they are doing 600watts is a non-issue, for you I would recommend staying with 400watts.

Overpowering equipment in a non-issue. I have quadrupled power before with no problems. Those Alpines will take 1000 watts rms each and laugh. Don't worry.
