Not loud enough? 150 a side ...
 

Im running the Energy 6.5 components, in a dynamat xtreme treated door. They get loud for most normal people, but I mean they are not loud enough for me at least without distortion kicking in. I have the gains set properly, and have them crossed at 80 hz, with no bass eq'ing. Each side of the fronts gets 150 RMS, and my sub 600. I am only running fronts, with on axis 3db attenuated tweeters....any ideas? Should 150w be more than enough for ear bleeding clear volume?

If each side is getting 150rms, then that's a lot of power already (IMO) ...
I mean most people don't throw that kind of power on, even when they upgrade their speakers ... you can throw a little more power but it's all going to depend on what those components are rated for (I have no idea) ...

And if you've only got 600rms in the back (so I'm assuming the sub is AROUND this number as well, likely below?) then I don't see why you'd want it even LOUDER up top ... I mean, you don't want to go deaf here (no seriously, you're going to get killed with the highs) ...

My only suggestion would be to add more power through another amp if the components can handle it (as in what are they rated for ... have you met those max's already).
Otherwise, I think you're begging to add a second set :p

3 way active

a TON of power to the tweets (mostly not used)
A TON of power to the mids, crossed over moderately high
a moderate ammount of power to the woofers


I'm running 4 way and it gets louder than I can stand. No Distortion.

I had to run 1600w rms ( 400w rms x 4 ) to two sets of 6.5" components
before I was happy with it...... there is nothing like ALOT of headroom :)

TBH, I don't want to hack the door and add more speakers. Maybe I am just being unrealistic, or my setup is fubared....I don't know. I guess to get good quality sound and be loud you need 3 way splitting the midbass/midrange up to lower distortion at high excursion right?

As for the sub, I put a couple towels in my port to let it act as sealed, since it was consistently too loud for the front stage, and well despite DTA it does not blend well together at all...I am quite disappointed in the SQ of my setup. (15 RE SRx 3.65cu @ 32hz)

Take the towels out and turn down your sub. You're on the right track for the speakers though.

if you are putting 150watts into a 75 watt pair of mid-woofers and they are distorting as you turn it up LOUD.... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out your distorting the drivers by over powering them. The drivers you chose (Energy) will never get louder without smoke being released (maybe if you cross them over at 120 Hz and make the sub pick up the bass impact load).

You need speakers that can take the power you can give them to get louder without adding speakers to the system.

Power range is depicted as up to 150w though. 75w is just the recommended. I know I am asking alot from pretty much 2 midrange speakers to cover high volumes for an entire car, since I don't use rear fill.

i ran 110watts rms a side and its still not loud enough for me either. im gonna swap them out and get 3way instead.. nothing better than a well made DIY active setup.

Why not get a higher power 2way set? Easier to install. Check out Morel, their drivers love lots of power.
