Old Vegas

a friend at work used to be into car audio years ago and has since moved on to family life.. hes got a pair of 12s (unsure of model#) that would have been top models I'm guessing 7+ years ago.. anyways hes gonna give me a good deal on them and he'll thank me for giving him some closet space once again... so basically I'd like to hear someones thoughts on the old vegas... another friend of mine had some older vegas (2 12s) in a ported box with the ports blowing into the cabin through the rear middle armrest in an older jetta, I'm pretty sure he was only giving them 200rms a piece, needless to say it was enough to rattle your eyeballs... I was very impressed... as a matter of fact it was that eyeball rattle that instantly got me hooked on bass... so plz give a holler

ohhhh, eyeball bass ;) yeah that is what hooked me on it many years ago, about 7yrs ago, would that be like the stroker(1st gen) or is that a touch to early? if its the stroker, man 1 note wonder, but that one note with enough power is going to hurt!! Good luck, and post some pics!

Stroker was designed as an SQ sub and used properly it can sound pretty damn good. Actually very good.

As for the original poster, get a model number or at least a series. There's lot's of choices and they all sound drastically different. It's likely a Vega or a Stealth series but get the model and we'll give you some KNOWLEDGEABLE information.

Got em... Its a V124, White vega logo on the dust cap, orange foam surround, 800max, likely 400rms 4 ohm svc, (whoa whats a svc?) serial # v124005196... that should be enough info... so what are your thoughts?

My first car was a 1973 Chevy Vega.......

Burned almost as much oil as gas....

Those subs are great. I had a Vega 15D4 in a 3 cu ft box tuned to 32 hz and it absolutely pounded, and that was off a 200 watt rms U.S. amp. These subs are very efficient and when they are put in the proper box will pound hard and sound good too. I'd still have mine today too if it didn't get stolen. :thumbsdow

Very versatile driver. It has a 3" coil but don't go much over the 400rms power rating. Also the spider will hold this driver back long before the surround comes into play and if it looks like it isn't moving a ton that's because it has a low 9.5mm Xmax. This is a decent sounding driver that can get pretty loud (the SPL/sensitivity number is much lower than advertised though) but it isn't the best driver for the SQ oriented people. It lacks detail.

Go with a 1.4net enclosure tuned to 35Hz for best results.

Fs 26Hz
Qes 0.37
Qms 4.4
Qts 0.33
Vas 80litres
Re 3.3ohms
SPL (1w/1m) 96dB (measured in labs at 89dB)
Pmax 400rms
Xmax 9.5mm

My opinion would be go ahead and buy it if you get a really good price on it and are in the market for a average to above average driver. Make sure the surround is still in good condition though as it used a foam surround and although they were treated pretty well it is something to watch for.

Well I've got the guts of the box built, ran out of wood for the baffle, still have lots of mismatched pieces to make a port... the surrounds are in not bad shape, though definitely not brand new... the box is looking decent, though I'd sure love a more precise table saw, my square is square but good luck matching up the table to it... well all I can do is make do with what I've got and see how it turns out in the end...
