Opinions on this Alpine setup?
 
I should probably have asked before I laid out the cash but here goes anyways.

I just purchased the following from a store here in Edmonton and it will be installed tomorrow in my Dodge Ram.

Front: Alpine SPS-609 6x9
Rear: Alpine SPS-500 5.25
Amp: Alpine MRP-F600 100w RMX x 4
Amp Wiring: 8Ga Alpine kit

Anyone see anything wrong with this setup or things I should look out for?

Yeah, look out for much better sound than you were getting with the factory speakers.....:D

The power wire is too thin if you decide to add a sub and second amp later, if you're going to stay with the corners you should be fine......:smilie_da

Don't forget to HPF those rears, they won't like 100W of full range sound.....:smokin:

This set up will be just fine but I agree with bigreddude with the amp kit wire. for that set up, that size wire is fine but If ever wanna upgrade you will need at least 4 gauge.

Thanks for the replies. Noted about the amp kit. I guess I just thought 8Ga wire is good for 100amps when the distance is kept less than 10 feet or so. The truck is sitting in their install bay just waiting for them to do the install tomorrow morning. Can't wait to hear the difference!

You are over 10 feet for sure in this truck, use the 4 gauge for sure.

I would still suggest you get them to do the 4ga kit for you........when you hear how much better it sounds, you're going to start thinking about a little more bottom end.....:eek::laugh:

4ga will give you the option for adding another amp up to 500W or so (depending on the type) to run a sub or two.....for the difference over the 8ga now, it's worth the extra $$ and the Alpine will appreciate it as well......:smokin:

Don't expect much midbass/bass from those speakers. Running them full range is going to sound horrible. Better cross them off around 80hz for the 5.25" and around 50hz for the by 9's

Thanks for all the info. I phoned the installer this morning and told them to upgrade to 4Ga wiring for the amp. Turns out the price difference was only $30...don't know why they didn't suggest this in the first place.

Ok, got the truck back and here's the initial review:

Install:
Not terribly impressed. The AMP was mounted underneath the rear sit behind the storage bin and seems to be wedged in and is not screwed down to anything but as it is wedged in it will likely not move. I wonder about the cooling though. I had to break out the vacuum cleaner and vacuum up a ton of wiring cuttings and cut wires...not impressed with this. I did want an invisible installation and good thing because I don't know if I would want anyone to see what they did. I did go for the 4Ga wire so I guess that is good.

Sound Quality:
Very clean clear sound. Sound is definitely lacking any sort of bass at low volumes and seems to come alive at much higher volume levels. This is what I was afraid of, I was hoping for a really full sound even at lower volume levels. I guess putting in a sub will be the only way to round out the bottom end of the system. If the goal was ear splitting loud then mission accomplished though. I don't think they did any sort of tuning on the system so I will do that this weekend. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get a fuller sound at lower volumes levels please let me know.

Future:
Now looking for a sub box that fits under the rear seat and takes up the storage area under the drivers side rear seat. I have seen these on ebay but I want to buy from someone in Canada. I am thinking of connecting the rear 5.25" speakers back the head unit rear channel (20w RMS) and using the 3/4 channel of the amp bridged to power a sub.

To be dead honest with you, im surprised you spent SO much on an amplifier and bought Type S components? Type R's can be had for around $200-250 and Type X's for 3-4$
