overkill?

Right, from the way it was mentioned in the post though, it sounded like he meant "with the gains at zero" as in "-18dB" or whatever the "highest" setting is... I understand what you mean though, its hard to get my point across since zero gains is sort of an oxymoron depending on how you see it.

The 0-18db is bass boost not gain. It just makes the low notes louder. Usually somewhere in the 35-60hz range.
Gain is used to match the amplifier to the head unit output voltage and can't be set to 0. You can set it very low, usually down to .25v depending on the amp. Doing so can kill a sub quick if you don't know what your doing. For initial setup, set this to w/e voltage output your head unit is. Usually 2 or 4 volts.
In my opinion, i wouldn't worry in the least about hurting those subs. I'm running a 1000w RMS amp on 2 400w subs with settings turned way up, and the only thing that cries is my alternator.
Another thing to remember, brand stands for a lot. Infinity is not a cheapo sub that you can get at future shop for $100. That amp is a fairly good match, if not a little weak for those subs. I wouldn't sweat sickin a 1500w amp on those. All depends on what kinda sound your looking for.

thanks for your commentary, so this being said i should maybe go to an other shop and get it tuned? Actualy set up the amp and not let it all at "o" or the lowest possible...
Bye the way, i know your supposed to break in the subs (i don't think i did). I never put my bass higher then 3 (o minimum and 6 highest; therefore the middle) and sound on the deck goes higher then 65 (never went over 35 yet) would this be to much of a beating for breaking in subs... had it install saturday....drove for a total of prob 4h
should i try and go a bit more gentle till they break in or its to late now? has the damage already been done? I know i should of wated a bit before cranking it up...but i was to anctious..took me since xmast to get this going...
and i forgot who put the post that infinity are good brand not cheap...not 100$ well guess what got it at boxing day for 100$ each + 4 year warranty for 35$ extra... so total of 235$ + tax:P. Since i have a warranty dont really mind if i did do damage on the subs, just would be fun to know

All you need is a digital multimeter to set the gains and bass boost and stuff on the amp to whatever you want, it's not very difficult and spares time and money of getting a shop to do it.
As for breaking in woofers, I don't believe a magical period exists... I've wanged all my stuff right out of the box and never had a problem, but its a hotly contested topic. The way I see it (after reading an article on the issue) is that if spiders loosened THAT much, and THAT quickly in the first stages of "breaking in" a sub, continuing at this rate, they'd have no resistance left to them after a few days. I doubt you've done any damage nor will do any.
