Overpowering subs.

I recently sold my car (along with my old set up) and i was wondering about sub ratings and amp ratings. Lets say i buy an amp that puts out 460rms bridged to a 4 ohm load. If i bought a single sub that was rated 300 watts rms, how much could i over power it? I know sub ratings are for heat not electricity. I was thinking building a sealed box (for extra air suspension) and then adjusting the gain on the amp so the sub gets enough power to just about reach its xmax? would my thinking be correct, or would this damage the sub. Could the extra wattage (electricity wise) mess with the voice coil wiring? thanks for the input.

set the gains and watch the excursion. I'm running a 12 rated 350w with a 600w rated monoblock. all fine and dandy.

search is your friend too.
