oxygen free 16 ga speaker cable....?
 

what difference does that really make, just wiring up a set of components, nothing too powerful, 50W RMS. how much of a difference would using 16ga of the oxygen free wire, versus just a regular spool of 16 gauge all purpose wire. the run is about 12 feet. thanks for any help. or is that gauge too small altogether??

the main difference is, the oxygen free cable wire will be less likely to corrode over time, sounds quality issues can happen at that time but not to begin with, also if your using just regular 16 guage shop cable or low strand count cable its more difficult to run.

so basically the fact that it's oxygen free/digital whatever, doesn't mean it'll send a better signal. it'll just last longer? so is 16 gauge regular spool wire too small?

oxygen free copper is just that, copper without oxygen. its a better quality wire, and is more conductive. but a problem is that when the wire is exposed to the air, it oxidizes, making it less conductive. the only solution is an oxygen free wire that has tin or another metal added to it so that it won't oxidize. i've only heard of this stuff tho, i've never ever seen it available at a store.

oxygen free is marketing BS...

All copper wire is virtually oxygen free, and altough one company may claim 99.999% its not going to be any different from the next wire that is actually 99.97%


IIRC Monster Wire started this marketing campaign, and anyone who knows anything car audio, knows how full of that company is....



Anyway ryan, tinned strands is a solution to prevent wire from oxidizing, but the tin also adds resistance... really you only need to tin the ends with solder that will be exposed to air/moisture and seal the jacket with some liquid electrical tape or any type of rubbery adhesive...

(power wire under the hood and the ground wire is the only wire I'd really worry about)

hmm, i can agree with that. theoretically better, but not much real world difference.
