painting mdf box

i have done a few boxes but always carpet the box, now im building one for some mtx subs for a friend and want to paint the box in red, but wanted to know if anyone had done this?also i heard that the cut edges need to be sealed before painting.so has anyone done this and if yes can they give me any tips?

put a layer of fiberglass resin on the area being painted - let it dry 24 hours then sand 400 grit or higher till smooth. Primer it well maybe, two or more coats and paint away.

If you paint the mdf straight it will absorb it liek crazy, so you'll need 3-4 coats at least.

Ive always been a fan of leaving the open edges of the wood in like 1/8th and fill it in with Drydex, sand it smooth, sand the whole box with like 300+ grit. two coats of primer and two coats of paint. Works every time for me, never tried resin.

3 good coats of primer and then paint

a renovation i did a few month back i custom made some wall panels for a kitchen and the painter (not his fault got paid $300 for the house) put 2 coats (no primer) on it straight looked like crap after it dried
