Just wondering what you guys thought of memphis equipment, as far as quality. Have any of you ever used this stuff? Any good? There is a guy in my area selling a 15" Memphis competition sub for $350. Is it worth this money? I already have a ported enclosure for a 15" sub that I think would do the job thanks guys!!!

I do not know what a 'competition sub' is as it is not a model number. It is obviously something he 'competed' with and 'he' may be a jackass or a genius. The sub may have been gently cared for or misused who knows? he wants a good price for it too so bear in mind subs tend to be used and abused

Memphis makes quality products and they generally stand behind their products I respect them quite a bit

putting a sub in a box you've got is kind of ***** nilly, the box should be matched to the subwoofer, it will work but probably not as well as it might

Ya I agree, when subs are used they are usually abused lol. I have been told many times by multiple people in the business to NEVER buy used stuff. It's just that I have this old ported box sitting around collecting dust (not even a year old). I had a cheap 15 in it...blew it then...I went to the two Kicker Comp 10s which I am running now (love these things!). I have tried to sell the enclosure but havent had much luck.

You would have to be lucky to slap random sub in random ported box and get good results. That may in fact be the reason you blew the so called cheep sub.

Keep what you already have or find out what ported box is required for that sub, if it matches (volume, port size) what you got by extreme luck then go for it.

pretty much every single prefab ported box for a 15 I've seen has been WAY too small with port tuning WAY too high. Great setup for killing a sub.

The exact model of said "competition" sub would help to let you know if the price is warranted. Also remember that used equipment bears NO warranty. In the car audio world, the warranty is to the original buyer only.

OK so how do I figure out what the the port size/frequency is??? The box itself measures 17.5" x 21.25" x 16". I'll do my best to measure the port: it is 12" deep, 1.5" wide, and 14.25" tall. Hope I did this right thansk guys!!!

it's about 2.3cu.ft after port and woofer displacement. Pretty darn small for a 15. I don't have any box programs on my laptop so can't really get the exact port tuning for you. But an experienced guestimate would be in the 40hz range

That depends on what thickness the wood is. Assuming it is 3/4" it would be tuned around 35 hz. That would leave a box volume of ~ 2.5 ft^3 after port displacement. The box volume is probably too small for a 15" driver. $350 seems a bit steep for a used sub.

I'd recommend looking at the CCA classifieds for a used 15" driver, there are probably better deals, and build a custom box. That could probably be done for less than $350.

scuba789, I just measured the thickness of the wood and it is 3/4" (good guess lol) What would the wood cost to build an enclosure? And also, is there some sort of website or something that has build plans for boxes? thanks!
