Power ratings question

Hi

What does it mean when a mono amp is only rated at 2 ohms? Does this mean that it cannot be hooked up to a 4 ohm sub?
All the other amps i see, have 2 ratings in their descriptions, one rating at 2 ohms and another rating at 4 ohms. Ususally the 2 Ohm rating is double that of the 4 ohm.

thanks for your help

You can hook it up to a 4 ohm sub, no problem, it's just that the amp won't produce as much power as it would if the sub were a 2 ohm model. I suspect the reason it it only giving the 2 ohm rating is because that is where it makes its most power. :dunno:

I don't know why. Its a Phoenix Gold that they have on sale at Best Buy for $99.00.
The Phoenix Gold Website is weak. There is no technical information for that particular model.:thumbsdow

If you look at the Bestbuy definitions the '4 ohm - full range' looks like it means peak power. It likely puts out 1/2 of that RMS, which is the number you care about.

edit: I did a google search and the only site where I could find RMS ratings rated it at 75W@4ohm, 150W@2ohm.

you have to go to the litature part on phoenix golds website and it will show you every product.

Found it, thanks!

I was planning on getting a 10" sealed sub but after closely looking again at my trunk space, i made a final decision to go with an 8". I will custom make the box for it to fit in a corner in my truck while trying my best to respect the cubic feet required. Most 8" seem to be 4 ohm and between
150 to 200 Watt RMS.
I have not decided on which 8" sub to get but right now its between the Infinity Reference 850W, JL Audio 8W1v2-4 and the
JBL Grand Touring Series GTO804.

I have found 2 amps that i can pick up locally for budget prices.
Phoenix Gold Octane R201
ftp://www.rodinaudio.com/Phoenix%20G...e%20R2.0.1.pdf
and
Infinity Reference 311A
Infinity - Car Audio

Which of the two amps would be a better buy?
Thanks for any help

I downloaded the PDF manual.
It states:
MAX Power 200W at 2 ohm and 150W at 4 ohm.
CONTINUOUS Power 175W at 2 ohm and 100 at 4 ohm.
Would this be ok for an 8" that states 150W RMS?

I like the fact that it has a defeatable crossover so i can use the one in my head unit.
