punch 160x4 power ratings cheater amp
 

hey i have a 1995 rockford fosgate punch 160x4. it is listed as 20 x 4 @ 4 ohm and 40x4 @ 2 ohm. but i am being told this is a cheater amp???

any one know the specs and how far i can drop the amp down?

I have owned many of the BBQ style RF amps over the years, I would not run it bridged below 2 ohm mono. As far as true power, my Punch 40 from 1993 was rated at 20x2 at 4 ohms, and 40x2 at 2 ohms, and the birtsheet stated 93x2 at 2 ohms, to give you an idea how much these were underrated.

ok i was being told that the farther i drop it down it will do crazy rms watts. thats nice tho how they rate it at 20 x 4 at @ 4 ohm but it will do alot more

I ran my Punch 40 at 2 ohm mono, and it handled it pretty well except for long road trips in the summer. With the age of your amp now, I would not run it below 2 ohm mono. I would guess 50x4 at 4 ohms, 75x4 at 2 ohms, approximately.

Mine was rated around 90x2rms at 2ohms so you're looking at ~45rmsx4@4ohms or 180rmsx2 at 4ohms.
If you bridge both sides at 2ohm mono it's going to get pretty warm. I don't recommend running it any lower than that. It was rated to 2ohm stereo from the factory as the lowest recommended.

so what you think it will do at 2 ohm bridge stereo and do i have to change fuses?

Generally I agree with what Jeep and Hardwrkr are saying regarding the old BBQ line of amps - I've had em all and still own a bunch, but not when it comes to the the 160X4. That amp was a rebadge of the 4020, which was no where near the brute that the 4040 that preceeded it was. The 4040 was truly two Punch 40s in a single chassis. I used to have no problems running a full system on a 4040, but when they changed it to the 4020, the performance really dropped off. The Series 1 4600/4.6x had more jam. The 240X4 was more like a 4040.

Real world power on a 160X4 is about 25-30watts per channel and ~80-90 watts per bridged pair. My recommendation would be to sell it and buy two Punch40s.

DUKK, I had a 400x4 before, was that equivalent to the 4080 (same as two punch 60's in one chassis?).
