Question for ALPINE 7909...

I have a Apline 7909L HU, and It intermitently sounds real distorted. most of the time is in the right channel. but just today the left channel is doing it also. It does go away if you tap or bump the deck.

I remember way back.... i spoke on the phone with Chris Lewis from Peramid, and he mention something about the preamp board's terminal strip needs to be bypass or something.

would anyone have his contact info?

I'm also wondering which preamp board needs the terminal bypass? there's a preamp board with the tone control on it, and the other one with the volume control on it.

Any help will be appreciated.

7909 info

I have studied this unit very carefully and also own them still. From what I have found out, the distortion you are dealing with has to do with the tone control segment of the unit. You can either buy new conrols and have them installed or bypass the tone section altogether. the other main problem with the 7909 is that they are known to load but not index a cd or play it. this has to do with the capacitors mainly on the cd transport that need to be replaced.

These units are finicky and need tlc but it also depends on how often you use it. I just ordered a bunch of 7909 parts and will have them installed soon. Good sounding unit...the best in my opinion and that is why i have done a bunch of studying on this product..

www.Pyramid-audio.com is where you want to go to get the info.. Chris Lewis is not really involved in the car audio segment of Pyramid any more...he just does the occasional special project.......hope this info helps.

You will definately see a 7909 in my ride!

Thanks for the info Greg.

I still have three of these 7909 HU, the one with the problem belongs to a customer. strangely none of mine have this distortion problem...... it sounds like the speakers are blowned or shorted out. but it was just the deck.

The transport problem..... now that one 9.5 out of 10. 7909 has that problem. I used to repair them with upgraded caps.... and it actually sounds better too. also the clutch for loading the disc sometime slips too much and fail to load the disc. dc-dc converter would go dead without warning, result is no sound etc....

I guess I have to figure out a mod for the the preamp section then.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but I have an Alpine 7930 (not as old school, I know) and it doesn't like burnt cd's. Sounds like both of you guys know your way around the Alpines, is it possible to swap out some of the internals on this deck, so that it will play cd-r's without affecting the SQ, as I like the deck? Thanks!

Talking 7909

Hey Joe, i am heading out of town for a while but I might give a call when i get back and see if you may want to part with one of the 7909's you have along with perhaps a 3558. Not too sure just yet cause i really have to determine what direction i want to go with my car. This whole car audio thing can get crazy you know! Talk to you soon

Talking 7930

Not to sure about the mod to the 7930. Never seen anyone willing to go through all that for the sake of burnt CD's. You may also want to check the Pyramid audio website i talked about earlier in this conversation.

Good luck!

I'm not too familar with the 7930 deck.. usually the internal you'll need to swap will be the whole transport. and that is if another transport is available. i really don't think its worth while doing. The mod alone will cost atleast $300+. I would just run a changer that could play cd-r, and it'll be nice and simple.
