Smaller diameter but much longer length. Again, coil diameter is only one aspect of power handling.

Sorry sir, my memory was recalling the older XXX with 1000rms which i personally know couldnt handle much if any more power then that. The new one will i guess have not seen one myself yet. As for which i louder especilly now we know this guy is looking for SPL/daily i dont think the XXX is what he wants and im positive he would be happier with a MX.
A few things i do know is the MX has a stronger motor (neo) with a higher BL and a larger diameter voice coil. Can you prove that the XXX has a longer coil? If so i would like to see it, i see no mention of it on the RE site.

Perhaps you can explain how you achieve 54mm of Xmax without a longer coil. Maybe shoot an email off to scott@ficaraudio.com and he can tell you some of the gap and coil specifics on both subs, if you're interested in learning more about them.

The MX has higher BL^2/Re simply because it has a lot more coil in the gap; the XXX uses split coil technology so efficiency is a little lower, especially considering the larger moving mass due to the added coil weight. Whether one is better than the other is really application dependent.

As for the older XXX, it was rated at 1600W RMS and a lot of people were running them on 2KW daily. Had to be careful about mechnical limits though because of it's high excursion design in the 12 spoke basket.

That's a nice sub. It's rated at 2000W RMS and can handle upwards of 4KW daily, if you are careful in how you manage your volume and gain. It will fit in your car if you can fit the mounting depth (it's a little over a foot deep) and works in enclosures very similar to most 12" drivers (1 cube sealed or 2.5 cubes ported, around those ranges). There are a couple of dealers in Alberta:

Econo Sound
4321 1st Street SE
Calgary, AB
T2G 2L2
(403) 243-6626

Audio Designs
10112 Centennial Drive
Fort McMurray, AB
T9H 1Y4
(780) 715-2266

Hope that helps.

if its spl you are into, take a look at the fi btl, or bl. btl more on the spl side.
both are more than capable of getting loud, and not sounding like total crap.
both can be tailered to what you are looking for(custom built). take a look on realmofexcursion.com. in their sub section, there is a test comparison done between quite a few subs. results are displayed on graphs, and it includes real tl spl scores, plus sound quality notes. good info

Bah, it's like deja-vu on the goddamn coil diameter.....

There have been a handful of people on RoE (including Shon I believe) who have sent 4kw+ to a new XXX and ended up with slightly roasted coils. For people not experienced with them, I wouldn't recommend more than ~2500-3000wrms daily. They are nice drivers, but like you said, they are rather inefficient. The mounting depth is probably a bigger concern than power handling though.

If you're looking for other daily monsters, you could also look into Treo SSXs, TC Sounds TC-5200 or even the TC LMS-5400. One of those TC 4hp subs would be a rather nice alternative to a XXX IMO

you can sometimes find deals on used xxx's for a much better price then new, ficaraduio for brand new btl's you could almost get 2 fully loaded 18" btl's for the price of 1 XXX but you want 12's, try Fi they dont have a warrenty other then they will work when they show up at your door, but ive herd they are great with helping you out anyway.
