Regular Cab Install Advice...

Hey Gang
First post here. Ive built a 3 different systems over the years but am looking to make this one my best ever! Ive got a Mint 1990 Dodge Ram that I want to build a killer system for.
Due to limited space behind the seat Ive been kicking around the idea of going with an 8w7, but build the box so that it fires sideways, towards the door. Like a bass tube I suppose but scratch built. Maybe 2, firing in opposite directions, in seperate airspace. One requirement is that I dont lose any legroom.
The stock stereo consists of 6x9's in the doors & 5 1/4's in the back. There is a ton of space in the doors so I am thinking of going with an 8" midbass, then 6.5's & tweets, with active passovers.
2 4 channel amps should power it nicely
My questions are:
1. Will a box like that work okay?
2. Component suggestions?
Thanks
S.

If you are putting in 8" midbass... why 8" subs aswell? Why not 13"

jl 13tw5s are only 2.5 inches deep man. And 2 of thoes would rock your singlecab. 1000wrms amp to boot and then your door configuration will be killer.

13's!? I never knew...
Im actually looking at the Kenwood shallow mounts. Most likely the 12's.
JL's are nice, but overpriced imo

The jls will put down the kenwoods anyday. The kenwoods are very nice, dont get me wrong.... but 1 jl will probably have the same output as 2 of the kenwoods. And talking about overpriced.... i saw that you put the option of 2 jl 8w7s on there.... so i figured same price will get you 2 shallow jls! And theyre are much shallower than the kenwoods.

Most likely because one is a sub and the other is a midbass????

does "overpriced" mean more than you are willing to spend? or that you have done a performance Vs price analysis on Jl and all of it's competitors and found that the EXACT same performance (or better) can be had for less money?...if that's the case, I'd like to see the specs on an 8 that can match or beat the 8w7 in every way.

Overpriced is in the eye of the beholder, if it does what you want, the way you want, and is at a price that you are willing to pay, then it's not over priced by any means, people love to bash JL audio, and I will agree they are not the be all end all of car audio, but they spend a shitload of money on engineering and manufacturing process to put out good solid performing equipment that they stand behind, if it was over priced, would it still be as popular as it is today???....people surely would have wised up by now and stopped buying it if it were.

ask one person who owns a Lamborghini if they think it's overpriced.

in what way will the JL's put down the kenwoods exactly?
output is determined by power applied, cone area and excursion. I'd love to see some actual numbers where the JL's put out "double" the power of the kenwoods.

600wrms to 350wrms of kenwood.
xmax of 9.7mm to kenwoods 8.5mm
And Sd of 0.0634 sq. m. to the kenwoods 0.049 Sq m

So not exactly double. But way more output per driver.

Perhaps overpriced was the wrong word. More $$ than I am looking to spend for the results I am looking to attain. :smokin:
I was toying with the idea of 8w7's, but they are still going to be too deep. The kenwoods are looking like a good bet & seem to have good reviews. Ill also be able to afford an amp that will power them properly as well!

Sorry... i was using the number value they use instead of the color chart.
By looking at the chart.... it looks like 1/6 th of the space between 500 and 1000 is okay. So we take the differece of 1000 and 500.... 500 and divide by 6ish. And we get 83ish. Its just a picture afterall... not science. Add that to the previous 500.... and according to that colorfull graph, its rms power handling is approx 583watts rms.

Now benifit of the doubt leaves us with 400wrms somehow... we will use orange instead of dangerous red, but okay. Still more.

And to the original poster. You will be very happy with your 2 kenwoods of you go that route. YOu can find them pretty cheap if you look around. And if you want to match it to a kenwood amp.... the KAC-9104D usually go for a decent price aswell. Sure youd be over powering..... set it up right and your set!
