with the DIY method you should add a relay to your EQs turn on lead, along with some capacitance on the output so it stays on for a second or two longer....
If you don't feel like dicking around Id suggest a pop eliminator from autosound2000...

^ a relay on its own should work just fine since any connection to the turn on lead going into the amp will be cut... using a diode alone will also work and might be a tad bit easier to wire.... (could also be cheaper provided he dosen't have to buy a whole pack of diodes)
