In response to reconing of speakers (with pics!)
...so basically this thread is in response to another posting by Timmyturtle on the reconing of speakers. Timmy was asking how to fix surrounds that came off a basket on speakers and I thought some pics of some reconing/voice coiling were relevant.
Let's see, my friend game me a pair of infinity reference 552i coaxial speakers which were blown. So I started snipping wires to get at the tweets that were still good.
And noted that you have to break off plastic that is glued to the magnet that has the wires going to the tweeters underneath them. Below is the bottom of the magnet with the plastic off.
And here is the top of the speaker with the tweeter "extracted". The tweeter sits on what looks like some lego/construx attachment piece that fits in well but is hard to remove, and thus broke (oh well, cheap construction
)
And the little tweeter pulled off:
Next, with a clear goal in mind of fixing the mids, I cut the surround off and sliced the spider near the cone so that I could remove the motor assembly:
And then the most fun part is seeing the poor burnt voice coil attached to the cone (over-enthused friend I have thinks turning up the volume to above distortion is cool:
Next I took a new VC and lined it up in the hole (is that called the well or something??), applied glue and then a round layer of Bulldog near where the cone will touch the spider and then of course some silicone on the basket for the surround to sit on. Don't forget to solder some wires to the terminals (I did it budget style).

...after that's done I waited a few hours for all the dust to settle, while applying weight to the speakers so the glue bonded well, then tested the frankenstein speakers:
And guess what happened...they sounded just like new . Let's see how long they last.
Suggestions are always welcome and you can even tell me I'm wrong, since it's my 1st time. The pics were taken with a Canon A75 3.2 MP camera and I find them crappy, so you don't have to tell me that, but you CAN ask for more pics.
The floor's yours guys and girls...

Thanks Eli, I was waiting for a post from you; was expecting a "you should've sent it to us instead!" but thanks for the encouragement rather!
Dereck, I know the tweeter post is glued, but it's the pins that hold the tweeter in place that broke (not the whole post, sorry for the confusion) so I'm thinking there's a tool to unleash the power
of those Thor pins instead of breaking them to get the tweeter off. I believe part of the tool is called patience though...

Yeah, about the tweeter going snap, I think that if you swivel more than 360°, then the wire going to the tweet snaps, but I think the actual tweeter can turn freely for days on end and not break.
Haunz, sorry about that...Bulldog Grip I believe is the brand name and it IS a polyurethane type glue, if I'm not mistake (I'll take a pic of the tube if you want). I believe if you've seen infinity reference speakers up close the tinsel lead is attached to the cone with something similar in consistancy (when dry) to what I used (when dry).
Ah, the voice coil, yes, where I got it from would be of the utmost importance...the voice coil was removed from another working speaker (actually a pyramid 6.5" coaxial). I now believe the only thing Pyramids are good for is salvage pieces!! In fact, except for a few minor differences, the voice coil in the pyramid is exactly the same diameter and all. Anywyas, I was suprised, but it's true!!
