Question

Hey,

I've got a RF 501x amp on order now. I'm wondering what sub to get to go with it.

I don't really want to take up ALL my trunck space so I was thinking either 1 12" or maybe 2 10".

Also should I stay with the 2003 RF's as they were desgined with the amp I'm getting?

Also either way I don't want to spend more the $400 on the subs....

Any ideas's out there?

Thanks

It really doesn't matter what brand of sub you use with that RF amp, but cosmetically, it's sometimes nice to have everything match. I think two 10s will give you a bit more satasfying low end than a single 12 would. (if you are looking for some boom), probably get more efficient output from your amp too. But you'll need a heavy duty 12" sub to handle 500 watts of power, probably like an HX2 or something (forgive me, but my knowledge of rockford's lineup is limited). If you have two 10s, pulling 250watts each, you have more options, and can get two less expensive subs.

Just a thought.

I'd be looking at ...

2 x HE 10s ported (RFP3410)

or

1 x Punch HX2 12 ported (RFD2212)

Yes but the rfd2212 does 500W RMS. My sub only puts out 250W with 2 channels bridged... not even sure if that is rms or not...

I heard that you can wreak the amp it the speakers are more powerful then the amp puts out is this true? If so then the rfd2212 is 2x more powerfull then my amp will put out...

1) Speakers/Subwoofers HANDLE power, they can't be "more powerful" than your amplifier because they don't produce any power. All they do is receive an A/C signal from the amplifier and respond to it. The only way you can damage the amplifier is by running a lower impedence than it can handle, turning the gains/bass boost way too high, not providing ample venthilation, etc.

2) Your amplifier is rated to produces 2 x 250 RMS @ 4 ohms bridged. This means you bridge channels 1+2 to 4 ohms and you bridge channels 3+4 to 4 ohms. The RFD2212 is a dual 4 ohm subwoofer, meaning you can bridge each coil to the amplifier, so each coil would receive 250 RMS. This means you would be sending the subwoofer a total of 500 RMS ...

Using two 10's would be much louder than a single 12. It doesn't matter a bit which brand of subs you buy. You know the power (250rms to each) so now you need to decide which enclosure to get then match the sub designed for that enclosure.
If you want to go sealed I'd suggest Alpine Type R, Elemental Designs O series, JL W3v2, etc.
If you want ported than Elemental K series, JL W3v2, Infinity Perfect, etc.
If it were me with that amp, I'd use two 10's ported and possibly the W3's or the ED k's.

ok... a few more dumb questions.... exactly how big would a 2 10" box be? A friend gave me his old box witch fits 2 12" subs in it and it barely fits in the trunk. Would a box for 2 10" be much smaller?

Also the way I want to set it up is to have my normal speakers (4) using 2 channels (left and right) and the the sub using the remaining two channels. Then maybe later on I'll get a second amp.

So if I have 2 channels bridged can that handle just 1 sub or 2 of them?

Also what is the difference bewteen ported and sealed in terms of sound. I listen to rock and alternative mostly so not sure if that matters.

You guys are really helpfull to a newb here.... thanks.

Hardwrkr I'm getting all the work done is Oshawa and reccomendation on a shop that can hook me up with the boxes you were suggesting? I got my deck installed an Ultimate Car Audio (across from th OC).

Thanks,

The size of the box is going to be determined by which sub you choose and whether you go ported or sealed. A sealed box will offer the best sq and be smaller at the sacrifice of overall output. A ported will yield higher output and if done correctly can be very close in terms of sq but will need to be larger.
It really comes down to how loud you want it to be and how much space you are willing to sacrifice.

So let's go with your plan of running the tweets and mids off the front of the amp and bridging the rear of it to a sub. If you are planning to add a dedicated sub amp in the future, I would buy a single 10 that will work well in a small ported box that has an impedence of 4ohm and a dual ported box (with seperate chambers) designed to work with that sub. You'll be up and running with a good setup. Then when you buy the second amp you can add a second 10 in the box and you're set.
If you think in the long run you'll likely just run this amp for everything, I would put a single 12 in a ported box and run that.

I've sent you a PM for some recommendations of shops to deal with in the Oshawa area.
