Peeps on the board have been talking about doing this with a variety of amplifiers.

Well, it's all well and good to run way under 'rated' load for burping, when clipping dosen't really matter. But for music it might not be the best idea.

An amp rated to IEC spec will be stable to .8X its 'rated' load, and will produce clean power there. Under that you could be running the amp into distortion without getting full power.

IE. a good 1ohm stable amp rated for 1000watts should be able to make 1250watts into .8ohms, but will probably only make about 780watts into .5ohms before clipping.

Just something to consider when planning a system, along with overall sub/box impedance, of couse...

Also, when electronics run hotter, they generally die sooner.

Also, this mainly comes from SPL where the user has determined impedence rise at their frequency, and doesn't translate to full range daily use like people think.

all amps produce distortion can you list some that don't
distortion is relative to output and greatly increases when close to it limits
