sealed or ported
 

i have 2 mtx 7500's and im not to sure if i should port or seal the box i listen to all kinds of music i like punch and clarity but i also like drown out bass so which way should i go and why just so i know for the future:dunno:

There are many different routes you can take when designing an enclosure. Generally, sealed enclosures are less efficient and require more power to drive as opposed to ported. If you are looking for the highest efficiency and would like to know the best enclosure your sub was engineered for, use this formula....Fs divided by Qes (these values can be found on your speaker spec sheet). If your result is close to 100 then a ported enlclosure would be best. If the result is closer to 50 then sealed is the way to go.


Fs - the resonant frequency of the driver

Qes - Electrical Q of the driver at Fs. Qes is a measure of the driver's tendency to resonate at Fs, based on its electrical characteristics (magnet strength, magnetic circuit characteristics, etc.). The driver's overall resonance characteristics are usually dominated by Qes.

Ported (when done right) sounds great for deep bass that sealed simply cannot. When done right, ported can be just as "tight" and "punchy" as any sealed.
The draw backs of ported: They require a larger box, their frequency response drops more suddenly below the tuning frequency (which typically doesn't mater because most music does not play lower than the average subs ideal tuning frequency)

As I mentioned before, the box must be built right. Follow the manufacturers recommendations or use a box-building computer program to find the ideal box volume and port size.

Port it!

While vented boxes have some merits -- they can also sound like a$$ when built improperly -- Sealed enclosures are more difficult to screw up and handle more power. Just my 2 cents -- Dukk where are you....

And I totally agree - if the box builder is a single brain cell mongoloid that expends considerable effort controlling their drool then for sure stick to a sealed box. If they have at least a partial clue, vented PWNS!!

..oh but I disagree about power handling. In my experience, sealed boxes only handle more power if they are undersized and the vented box is messed up by being tuned high or it is too large...

Ported unless you have space issues (ie. me).

yup! or you can always do some glass work :thumbsup:. This is also why you buy an suv (Blazer). There is PLENTY of room to work with.

I say go sealed, if you like tight and punchy bass. If you really want a certain low-end frequency accentuated then add an eq and play with that. But if you're in the SPL circuit and want some crazy DBs, then go ported but you lose fidelity, personnally, I like to hear the music the way it was recorded but then again I recently became an SQ type person, my SPL days are over.
