hi im a newbie on boxes, just trying to get an idea of what people consider better?? i seen alot of people preferring ported, but does ported make that bigger of a difference? just curious. also, if the sub that you have says on the specification sheet, that it needs to be in a sealed box, is it a bad idea doing otherwise such as ported? thanks a lot!!

please search google next time.

it depends on a lot of things.what subs are you using?some subs are not ment to be in a ported box.a ported box is louder than a sealed.a low tuned ported box will sound very similar to a sealed box.what kind of wood working skills do you have it is just a little harder to make a ported box.

hope some of this info helps

^ Why should he search Google? THIS is the best place to ask.

If one knows what they are doing then a vented box is superior 99% of the time. If one is new to building boxes then sealed is much safer.

I was going to ask about this latest trend that seems to have developed. Why send everyone away to search engines when they have a question? I think the guru's on this forum are very pleasent to deal with and I wouldn't take anyone elses advice for car audio or almost any other subject over the people here.

ported = louder, and if low tuned it will sound very good, like a sealed box (but louder) only disadvantage of ported is its harder to make (if your making it) and the ported boxes generally take up more space than sealed boxes. Not that big of a deal if you got lots of room though.

Are those the kind of vague, generic answers that you can find on google?

Ported does not equal louder. In most cases peole tune their boxes a little bit higher so they are louder over 10-15 hertz range (usually somewhere in the 40-65 hz).

A low tuned box will NOT sound similar to sealed. Ported has a much steeper roll-off slope, but also extends much lower before the rolloff occurs. A low tuned ported will also give you a flatter response (meaning it is NOT louder, it just plays lower).

Ported does require a larger box than sealed. If you don't use a larger box it will be tuned too high and sound like poo.

thanks guys for the advice. yeah, i also rather post here than google. much better reponses from fellow canadians! anyway MALTESECHICKEN you said that ported does not require a larger box than sealed. but then you said if you dont use a larger box it will be tuned to high ??? do you mean the placement of the port is the most important?? thanks
