Sealed Versus Ported
would love to listen to your car defro, from what i hear its unbelivable. according to what people at the show said. as far as you listening to my car, wouldnt that be like taking a mustang out for a test drive after owning a ferrari?? lol

So how ya gonna explain more then that... ?
Sounds to me like fb changed to something closer to the cars resonance when you opened up the port...
that could cause more then a 3db gain....

The 'cabin loading' was already there as the sealed box was already in the car. The box already had a slot port in it that was covered over when the put the new woofers in. They metered the car as sealed. Uncovered the ports and metered again. 4 dB gain. Yep, it was all in the port.

^as Dereck said
also the 3db gain you speak of is mathematically consistent but there are variables here too so 4dB is fairly believable (what if's like the cars harmonics, the freq of choice, the port may have led to boundary reinforcement, the size of the box before and after (might have been optimal w/ port etc.))

My understanding + experience is that
Sealed needs more power than ported to get the same sound...
But they will both "sound" the same if the boxes are built to spec.
It's all a matter of what type of car it's going in as well.
I find that in a hatchback, a ported box sounds better and in a trunk, a sealed sounds better.
Dont ask me why.

Nice to see you duking it out Randy!!! I have listened to Quartman's car and I like it.
Now, the main problem I encounter when it comes to vented enclosures is that many people use "cookie cutter" pre-fabs and expect them to work with EVERY woofer Because of this a lot of ported boxes I have heard do suck.
However, if a COMPETENT person designs a SPECIFIC box for a SPECIFIC woofer -- A ported box can be fast, tight, low and controlled. Nevertheless, a sealed box can be "idiot-proof" as the margin for error is larger for sealed boxes than it is for vented enclosures.
I have had good ported boxes, I have had ****y ported boxes, I have had good sealed boxes, I have had ****y boxes but one thing remains true in all cases -- I have never had a ****y tight box!
