It will also depend of where the product is made.
With free trade if it's made in the USA then you'll get a tax break. If it's made anywhere else get out the check book

Two Words... SHOP LOCAL! if you want to have a local shop in the future... support it... Your local shop will look after you and will back up what they sell with warranty... Cross border items are not covered.. how much are you saving if you have to ship it to the u.s.a. a few times for shipping?????

Clarification...

Unless a gift, you will ALWAYS pay PST and GST for something shipped across the border...BUT you would pay that at your local store anyway. Remember, tax is assessed on the declared value of the goods (declared by the shipper on the shipping form). So if the shipper declares $100, that is a lot less tax than if the shipper declares $500. Many private shippers will declare whatever you ask. Most companies won't. And, if declared at a certain value, that is all that you will be insured for. Also remember, customs is NOT STUPID...a niece piece of brand new electronic equipment for $25...a bit of red flag I would think.

DUTY will be charged on goods not manufactured in the U.S. NO duty on goods manufactured in the U.S. under free trade. Duty is DIFFERENT from tax!!! They have NOTHING to do with each other.

If shipped via UPS or similar, there will be a brokerage fee to declare the parcel and arrange payment of applicable taxes and duty (if there is duty). UPS will pay them for you and you reimburse UPS on arrival of the package.

I have had many good experiences purchasing from the U.S. But take ALL extra charges into account...shipping, taxes, duty, brokerage fees, and exchange rate. The difference in price is not as great as it seems, but you can still usually save a few dollars. You may, however, be giving away warranty.

Every single time I get something from UPS I get tagged for brokerage and VAT tax (duty)...

Shipping with US postal service, you pay more, it takes longer, but you pay no brokerage...

After doing the math, I figured an average ground shipment from USPS is going to save you about $15... but they don't deliver it to your door either...

With FEDEX I got an invoice in the mail about a month after the package arrived for brokerage and tax ONCE...

I've got packages from fedex 3 times since, and haven't been billed... (I think they changed their policy ???)

Now- keep in mind, the reason you don't pay tax (and brokerage to figure out the tax and clear it) with USPS is because you are actually supposed to go to your local tax office and declare it yourself!!! (you are actually 'supposed' to do this with ANY purchase you make from individual to individual)

Perhaps this is how FEDEX expects you to do things... wether or not customs makes a note that you are recieving something, I don't know...

It may also depend on what you are getting???

Not always.

Sometimes they either don't care, or just don't check to verify. Well, that's over where I am. :D Mexico and parts of Central America are acceptible sometimes too.

UPS/Fedex Ground only for brokerage.

FYI...last time I had a package shipped USPS, I had to pay the taxes when I picked the package up at the post office.
