simple amp wiring question???

hey, my names chris im new to the site and im starting to learn the more technical part of car audio, but i have a little experiance with installs. ok heres my question

(sony xm-gtr2022)
my amp spec sheet says maximum outputs
400w x2 at 4 ohm
600w x2 at 2 ohm
1200w monoaural at 4 ohm

but then it has power outout: 202 w rms x2 at 4 ohms

(infinity 1230w)each sub is 300w rms at 4 ohms and 1200w peak

how should i hook this up? its not installed yet but i have each sub wired to its own channel, so each sub should have 400w or will they have 202w?

is 202 to low for the sub? and what if i wired them in parallel for the 2 ohm?. basically i need help understanding what will give me what before i learn the hard way lol, thanks

Always go by rms ratings, that being said you are getting 202 wrms per sub (one per channel).
Should be decent power but i would look into getting an amp thats a mono channel that will do the two subs parallel, say about 600-1000 wrms @ 2 ohms. xtra power is ok as long as its used wisely:smokin: youre amp bridged is only good down to 4 ohms, go any lower and it will prolly fry.

i see, ok so how could i get the 600w? wire them in parallel to just one channel instead of bridged?. sorry im just confused on how theres different ratings but only one rms

You'll be getting 202W RMS x 2 @ 4 ohm. Just like you figured. Is it too low for these subs? No, but you won't be getting the best output from them. Secondly, if you feel the need to set the amp/head unit controls at near max settings to try and squeeze more out of the woofers, then yes having 202W for each woofer is not enough.
Ideally, you want an amp that is up to the task, and then some. There's nothing wrong with going A LITTLE more than the RMS of a woofer.

So your subs are 4 ohm, single voice coil drivers. If they were 4 ohm, dual voice coil drivers, you could wire the vc's in parallel to give you a 2 ohm load from each woofer, allowing you to get the 250W for each.

Pissed? I would be. That amp will allow for 500W of usable power, yet you paid for 1200W (technically). If you like the subs, then I suggest getting an amplifier that'll do 600 to 750W x 1 @ 2 ohm. You'd wire the subs in parallel to present the amp with a 2 ohm load.

http://www.kicker.com/zx_amplifiers How about the ZX750.1? 750W x 1 @ 2 ohm.

http://www.mtx.com/caraudio/products/amplifiers/TC6001.cfm MTX TC6001. 600W x 1 @ 2 ohm.

What did you pay for the Sony amp, if you don't mind me asking? It'll work. It's just not the best match for your subwoofers.

You could keep that amp. Pick up a single 12" woofer with an RMS of 500W - best if it was a 4 ohm SVC (single voice coil) driver. You'd use a bridged connection at the amp to get the 500W to the sub.

the amp is $249.99 at crappy tire, im not pissesd it was a money in my pocket,no amp and my old lady said ok to it lol, no i didnt do my research but my next adventure is to get a reg cab truck box and make a copy of it or two and do a shallow mount system, id like to do 2 or 3 rockfords or what ever i can afford. maybe i can get that amp to work with two shallow subs but i havent looked hard into it yet. mainly i want to build a box lol thats my excuse and i seen an s10 with a rockford and the matching box

futureshop is the only place locally that stocks mtx so if i remember ill check that out, thanks

You could try hooking both subs up to the amp, just like you're planning. And hear how that sounds. Then, you could wire one sub to the amp, bridging the channels to provide 500W to that single sub. Of course this idea would be hard to accomplish since it would require a 2nd enclosure, which would be another cost. However, if you liked the performance of the single sub with the extra power, then you could sell the other sub and enclosure.
Just another thought.

any excuse to get new toys is ok with me lol, im going to look into the shallow mounts a bit more but now that i know i have 202 rms per channel or 500 rms bridged it will be easier to shop. actually i do like these infinity's, we installed them in a ported box just like mine and had them in a grand cherokee. personal prefferance i liked how deep they were for a mid level system and snatched a set up when i could afford it but ya now i know, thanks

ideas on my next adventure are flowing and im sure that post will be soon lol

What kind of vehicle do you have? A truck, by the sounds of it. What does this adventure entail? We'll be here to give you a guiding hand, when you seek it.

I had a brief look into shallows for someone else. The price can be quite a bit for, and I noticed that some of the recommended sealed enclosure sizes were very similar between those for 'regular' sub, and those for shallow mount. I've also read that shallow mounts have more of a tendency to "bottom out" compared to similarly powered and rated "normal" subs. Just something to consider.

im looking to buy a truck in the spring, the adventure is no more then to build my own box with braces or something unique based on a reg cab truck box, with 2 10"s. i like the look of p3's but havent looked up specs or went for a listen until i see what i can get locally first, eg futureshop or even crappy tire

i got thinking last night that after someone does the math or whatever, if my amp bridged is 500 rms why cant i just hook them up bridged to get 250 rms per sub, which is closer to the 300 rms the subs are rated at and i dont have to buy a new amp? sure its still not ideal but its what i have and with a good wiring and connections i could be happy lol. hopefully that 250 rms theory is good? is their a formula to figure this stuff out?
