hmm...i heard that they were tracking the radio id numbers so that it was going to be hard to resigter the canadian units for US subscriptions, but that's just what i heard...

anyone ever hear of this problem?...a guy buys a brand new unit and goes to register it but the sirius people say that radio id is already registered and won't let him start up a new account?...

I tried this yesterday. US account, canadian purchased radio. (not grey market). The id must be known to be canadian because this starmate missed the extra usa channels. You will not get them with a radio's purchased in canada. You either need to find old stock or purchase american unit online.
