speakers sounding hollow, bass sounds horrible

I have a 2002 nissan sentra gxe. I have 4 mtx 6 1/2" 2 ways, 2 in front and 2 in the back. I believe they are just low model speakers and the stock (I'm guessing) 7 inch? little sub thing in between the rear speakers. When I play songs in the car I can't have too much bass because the bass sounds hollowed out or sounds like it's going to blow my speakers. I'm not sure if it's just because I have crappy speakers, or if they're just too small of speakers to deliver a decent bass response. I don't have a sub in the car if that helps. Would I have to invest in a better set of speakers? or possibly get components? what's the difference between 2 or 3 way speakers and components? Thanks. If it helps I have the Alpine ida-x305 deck, bass @ +3, treble @ 0.

Sounds like they were isntalled badly and your rear waves isn't at all seperated from your front waves (in plain english, the speakers aren;t sealed off well so there's a big air leak near the cone)

Well I put the spakers in myself actually. Had to do some adjustments on the part that holds the speaker to the door in order to get them fit in the car. Could that also be why my doors rattle when there is bass? How would I be able to fix that?

could be a phase problem, try with the fader (front/rear) and see if there's more bass output when only the rear is playing (or front)

Install them properly. And make they are all wired in phase of each other. If you can't install them properly. find a local shop with a good reputation and they should be able to take care of you.
