SPL can blow an air bag !!!!

So Im cruzing with my bro Shawn..... and he drops it on me that a big system can cause your air bags to blow.....

I laughed my azz off, since Im sure you would have to hit the impact sensor pretty hard to make em blow.......

but I thought Id throw that out there.... who has seen it happen :D ???

A few years back the exact opposite rumours were being passed around after dBDrag finals.. :ohwell:

So you heard that an SPL system can keep your air bags from going instead of causing them to go ??

SEe I heard there was a rumor, but never could find evidence to back itup!! Seeing as how most mechanisms are half mechanical, I couldn't see how it could happen, but hey anything is possible!!! Maybe someone should offer it up on Mythbusters :P They seemed to have nailed the windows blowing off your car episode pretty well, even got a big name to come out and help!!!

The impact sensors that tell the air bag to go off aren't even mounted inside the car, if I recall correctly. They are mounted at the ends of the vehicle. I'm not sure though where side impact sensors are for side airbag-equipped vehicles. Those I suppose could be in the doors.

Most impact sensors don't go off until there is accident above 10mph. So, unless the sensor is faulty or stupidly sensitive, no, it's not going to set off air bags. Those sensors are switches and work with the 8mph bumpers on cars to a) reduce injury above 10mph in a collision, and b) reduce damage below 10mph in a collision.

So unless your subs can mimic a collision of 10mph or more, no, it will not set them off.

Not quite. A few years back it was rumoured that one or more of the top performers were using hidden air bag charges to pressurize their cabs and create artificial SPL numbers.

So instead of SPL causing air bag deployment, air bag deployment was causing SPL. This, of course, was never proven.

Speaking of mythbusters....

Did anyone catch their SPL attempt???? They hooked up a crankshaft to the output of the transmission and disconnected the driveshaft (300 series Mercedes Diesel), ran a connecting rod to the back of a 36" diamter plate steel "speaker" inside the car, used a rubber inner tube as speaker surround and went for SPL!!!! Needless to say, there were no more seats in the car...

They hit 163db's with it before the sunroof popped and the connecting pin between the crankshaft and connecting rod broke...

Go with ballbearing connections and no sunroof???? LOL
