By the time you're done with shipping, taxes, and duty, you'll still end up paying a good chunk more than that original sale price - which doesn't mean that you're not still savind money over hitting one of the local shops.
sorry incorrect. i picked up a lightning audio la150.2 (not exact model number) for 60 bucks taxes in shipped with duties.
i also purchsed a hifonics bx12006d for 460 bucks everthing in, and a milwaukee 3/8 hammer drill for 250.

the lighting audio amp i saw for 120 bucks plus tax in a shop in orangeville,
the brutus you can`t even get in canada,
and the drill in home depot was 389 plus tax.

those three examples indicates savings of 30-50% of the cost in canada.
you may of had bad luck with an item, but your statement only supports your purchase.

i don`t want to turn this thread into a pissing contest or into local shop bashing, everyone in this country has a right to earn a living, and to obtain a fee suited for their needs, but its not going to be from my pocket whenever possible.

I think you need to read my post again; a little more carefully this time.

Does ebay really hurt your business that much?

umm i did read your post carefully but i`m seeing fictiticus numbers. like i mentioned i have purchased a few items off ebay and these times i have been satisified with the service, and have been satisified with the shipping costs that I PAID.

i don`t know where rob came up with the $100 doller U.S shipping number but as a vendor he has to protect his best interests and is entitled to earn a living. but outfits such as ebay and other on line vendors take a chunk out of the canadian retailers profit margin, so i can expect him to be be a little "non compliant" with this entire situation.

is there any retailer here that can offer me a hifonics bxi2006d for close to 500 bucks taxes in?

so far just ebay, or perhaps another american on-line wholesaler.

but truth be known that this transaction was very slow and arduous. the seller forgot to ship my item for approx three weeks so it took a little longer than expected but it was worth the wait.

First, realize that he did not "forget" to ship you the item. He did not have the item in the first place. I can quote anyone the best price on the planet for something I don't carry either. Ordering it in takes time, if the guy is not a authorized dealer, he has to go and buy one from whatever backdoor guy he deals with to get you one. If the backdoor guy does not have it, then the wait is even longer.

There is a lot of brand new stolen goods on ebay as well. A container that has been opened is a good example of this. Commercial theft is a big problem and alot of people do not realize it. If the clown that is selling the stuff that was stolen and not telling you, he makes 100% profit so who cares how much he is selling it for. If he has removed serial numbers is a good indication that the item is of questionable history as well.

Was the shipping container dropped in transit and damage occured. This is another way that stuff ends up on Ebay .Some sellers deal directly with the insurance companies that provide the insurance to the shipping companies. They sell off the new and damaged goods from the container. Sometimes you win, other times you lose.

In all cases though, E-bay has become a clearing house for stolen and damaged merchandise. You cannot tell me for one minute that you don't know or have not heard of someone getting the shaft on a E-bay sale. This happens almost every day. Sure there may be good sellers but there are a ton of real "stars" there as well.

Where I came up with the $100 US shipping charge is simple. I looked at the auction which is there for all to see. This is another great thing about E-bay, they suck you in with the cheap price and then charge you two arms, both legs and your dog for shipping. $100 US to ship a basic sub and amp.....I can air ship to Britain for that price.

that is quite possible, but the seller is from one of those "ebay stores". i spoke with him on the phone a couple of times but the matter got resolved.

as far as the stolen stuff? i`m sure everthing in your last statement is very close to the truth.

but we as consumers get fed up paying the markup...............

I know this isn't the right place to talk about this, but i have had good experience buying in the US. I like canadian retailers, but they've got to do better...
I just bought a PAC SWI-ALP online, its coming from Florida. I really wanted to buy it in Canada, i tried to find it online in canada, then tried 2 local retailers. Good reputable Custom audio shops. One even appologized for the unability to get a better price.
The 2 canadian prices i was quoted were 140 and 125 plus 14% tax.
I bought it online from florida:
Price 46.00 us (list was 89.99)
- 5%, existing customer discount
= 44.60 us
add 13.08 ups shipping
add 6.00 for money order and .88 postage
I got the e-mail this morning, saying it was shipped and a ups ground tracking number, so far, it's in SC. I emailed UPS to ask the customs and brokerage fee, but even if its 30.00, i'll still be way ahead.

You guys who are vendors, really are going to have to do a lot better. You're getting screwed by Importers, middlemen and distributors. You have to cut them out if you want to be competitive.

The other item i ordered wasn't available from anyone other than the manufacturer, the LANSTAR is a brand new interface.
Again, from my local audio shop, 300.00 + 14% tax.
I bought it for full list price, 159.95 US, shipping included. Then they told me it was backordered for 3-4 weeks. I suspect that means 4-6 weeks, but there isn't any place else to get it.

Tom.F1., thanks for understanding the reality that we vendors see every day. In some cases the CDN importer or middleman is a good thing as they offer a great value to both myslelf and the end customer. However there are more than enough CDN distributors that continually charge us more for the products than we make on it. When a customer asks us to be competitive, we end up selling something at our cost in some cases just to keep your business. This makes it hard to remain in business by any means and I am sure that all people agree that people who work should make some kind of profit. When we collapse the profit we make on a sale to keep the customer happy, sure you get the good deal but our middleman is still making his full profit. Something needs to give here and it should not always have to be the vendors.

Thank you Rob I could not have said it any better myself. The first thing people think is that we are running away with tons of profits. And thats not the case. Here in Canada distributors act like distributors and not a US distributor that not only sell on wholesale levels but then open a online store under a different name and then mark up $10. So now they dont mind making $10 cause they are also pocketing the wholesale profits. Same company. So in the end we get screwed. So dont also assume that your local dealer is the issue.
