Sub help

I'm not quite sure what kind of subs I should get, I'm thinking about getting type r's because everyone says the can handle power well and everything. But would it be worth it to spend a little more/ a lot more :P to get a type x?

m3n4ce 05-18-2011 12:05 PM

In my opinion unless you plan on doing entry competition or anything like that, those Type R's will provide more then enough bass. There very reliable and can handle a ton. Going with the type X would almost be overkill for just your casual listening. As well as not only would they cost you a lot more on the subs them selves you would be looking at more money on an Amp to properly power them as well.

As mentioned above..depends on what you're looking for. X's are excellent subs (one of the best sounding subwoofers I've heard to date along with jbl gti and ID max), but are a bit finicky to set up and power properly. R's sound good, are very reliable, get real loud (maybe even louder than x's with the same power) with the right box and are inexpensive...I guess that's why I'm using them again...hard to beat from a value point of view.

Thanks guys that makes sense :P I will try and get some good type r's do you think its worth it to buy brand new compared to used

Good deals can be had on used equipment, but it's always buyer beware. Take a DVOM, test all coils for proper ratings, take a flashlight and see if you can see the voice coil through some venting. It should be copper colour, not black. Do the push test in the centre of the sub, if there's no rubbing, that's a good sign.

Good luck

For around the same price as the Type R, try out a JBL Power series driver

I also agree with m3n4ce about the X's, they are one of the best SQ woofers ive heard but they'll eat power dry, they need at least 800rms to get them movin, and can go nice with around 1200 in the right box. I had a single SWR-1242d (12inch type R) and let me tell you with around 550-600rms they'll knock your socks off man. They are indestructable and they realy kick hard for what they cost. One of the better deals in the subwoofer category....

JBL power are a nice sub as well, but the frame is way too big for a 12...takes up as much room as a 15..don't know what they were thinking doing that...the previous model was a much better design and essentially the same sub mechanically.

You could also look into Image Dynamics IDQ's or JLW6v2's

Sundown Audio SA Series works very well as well
